After a gap that felt long enough for us to forget that The Great Indian Kapil Show was not entertaining enough last season, the show returned with season 5. This time, the show has itself added a laugh in its title jingle – that says, Hasi ka Tyo-ha-ha-ha-haar. The premiere episode rolls out the Drishyam 3 team as its opening guests, days ahead of the film’s release. Great promotional instinct. But the entertainment went missing right away!
Ajay Devgn, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, Mrunal Jadhav, and Jaideep Ahlawat arrived on the premiere episode of season 5, with director Abhishek Pathak, and the episode leans into a festive mode. It’s a warm enough premise for a season opener, but before the sketches take over, the initial chat could not generate laughter or interest from the viewers.
The One Time Sunil Grover Did Not Impress!
Sunil Grover and his new avatar were the best-kept secret of the show, and I thought he would finally bring the much-awaited laughter with the last segment! He arrived with an imitation of Ajay Devgn, which, on paper, should be a highlight moment. In general, Grover doing an impression of any star is usually the safest bet in Kapil’s show. But this time, it misfired. The act did not land well!

Out of the blue, Jaideep Ahlawat, with a career built on intensity, gets roped into a dance segment with the revived Sona-Mona pairing of Krushna Abhishek and Kiku Sharda, presumably banking on the serious actor does something silly trope! The only thing that worked was Ajay Devgn’s dry one-liners that were positioned throughout the episode!
Honestly, nothing actually lands in the opening episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 5. Sunil Grover’s impression of Ajay Devgn remains an impression rather than being funny. The Sona-Mona bit by Krushna and Kiku, dancing to Hasi Ka Tyo-ha-ha-ha-haar was the only segment where you could hear Ha-ha during this show that promises fun, laughter, and entertainment!
Season 5 had one job in its opener – to entertain after a long break! However, this rerun seems to have hit a format fatigue. The guests are trying, Kapil is trying, Krushna and Kiku are trying, Sunil Grover is trying, Archana Puran Singh and Navjot Singh Sidhu are trying, but trying isn’t the same as landing.
The banter between Kapil, Archana Puran Singh, and the supporting cast relies on the same tired jabs about Archana’s loud laughing or physical appearance. Moreover, making an entire cast sit and talk with just the three of them looked so off! If this is the Hasi Ka Tyo-ha-ha-ha-haar the promos promised, then either my humor has gone for a toss, or I do not know how to laugh! The Great Indian Kapil Show starts on a sluggish note. While the star power of the Drishyam 3 team brings initial curiosity, the writing team needs to reinvent its punchlines and ditch decade-old comedy templates if this season wants to stay relevant on a global streaming platform like Netflix!
