The Thai murder mystery draws to a tense conclusion. Here is the ending explained- the killer’s identity and the fate of Wan.

Delusion, a Thai series released on Netflix, was dropped on 25th September. A heady mix of  folklore, horror and a murder mystery Delusion is a potent cocktail! And central to this adventure is a school teacher Wan and her dysfunctional family, the village of Changkhan in the Loei province, northeast Thailand and the folklore of a malevolent spirit Phii Pong.

Delusion Plot

The murder of a young boy in the village of Changkhan leads the locals to believe in the resurgence of the ghost Phii Phong. Trouble mounts for Wan and her family as her father Narong- suffering from dementia- is accused of the murders. The villagers believe that he’s possessed by the ghost Phii Pong- their fears fuelled by the local shaman Sak (also Wan’s mother’s brother) for his personal greed. Wan tries hard to prove her father’s innocence. Pete, a newly transferred police officer, investigates the case. Pannee and Dr. Wat are the other central characters who play Wan’s mother and brother respectively. Apart from being a murder mystery with undertones of horror elements, it is also a story of family love and bonding.

Warning: spoilers ahead for Delusion, the Thai web series.

Delusion Thai series Ending Explained: Who Is The killer?

The final episode unravels with multiple twists and turns! The layers of onion keep peeling off jolting the viewers with one hidden truth after another! From what is revealed at the end of episode 5 it’s clear Pannee kills the shaman Sak and sets his house on fire. The final episode opens with Pannee washing blood off her hands and throwing the dagger and the teeth into the river- washing away the sins or washing away the truth?! Midway through the episode the killer is revealed – Dr. Wat! Wan’s brother.

Wan is overpowered by Wat and is abducted and taken hostage in a boat. In a series of flashbacks Wat confesses to his crimes, right from his first murder down to the last one where he, and not his mother Pannee, actually kills the shaman. Wat’s disturbed mental state leads him down the path of a serial killer. His psychotic streak stems from a childhood trauma of being bullied and tortured. This raises an uncontrollable urge in him to seek revenge and go on a killing spree. Initially the killing was an accident.

As an act of self defence against a village bully Wat accidentally kills him by forcefully pushing open the door. The impact of which sends the boy hurling down to his death. But the thrill of taking a life and deciding how much one should live gives Wat the rush. His sense of power is derived by killing someone. And as a trophy he extracts a tooth from each of his victims and collects it. In a series of flashbacks it’s shown that Wat’s parents and the shaman (Wan and Wat’s uncle) cover up each of his crimes only to protect him. But the shaman has other intentions. He takes advantage of the parents’ predicament and starts extorting land and money from them. He turns these killings into a supernatural phenomenon and cooks up the story of the local ghost Phii Pong. The villagers buy into the folklore/ lie and succumb to the greed of the shaman. Wat murders the shaman to seek revenge.

Wat’s reason for holding Wan to ransome has a back story of resentment and revenge. When Wat was being bullied by the local bully Wan deliberately ignored Wat’s plea for help- she was jealous of her mother’s love for Wat. She believes that their mother favours and loves him more. Eventually Wat lets her live, giving her a chance to repent. There is a tense moment where Wat has Wan at gun point and he pulls the trigger. Only to shoot in the air. He eventually overpowers her with a heavy dose of midazolam- a powerful sedative- and escapes. But before losing consciousness Wan begs for her son’s life and promises not to reveal Wat’s truth. The police rescue both Wan and her son from the boat.

What Is Wan’s secret?

In the final episode the grey shades of Wan are revealed. In a desperate bid to protect her father and prove his innocence Wan drives him away from the Village. She decides to hide at a lake side cabin. On the way she makes a pit stop at her husband’s house to get some cash. She is encountered by her husband and they land up in blows. After much struggle the husband overpowers Wan and strangles her, almost killing her. There is a sudden attack on the husband. It’s Wan’s father Narong who smashes the husband and kills him. Initially Wan reacts remorsefully at her husband’s plight. But there’s a sudden switch in her and she lets her father pound the husband to death- survival instincts and the desperate need to keep custody of her son. She decides to keep the whereabouts of her brother a secret from the investigating officer Pete- atonement for her past mistakes.

What Happens To Narong & Pannee?

Meanwhile the police arrest Pannee and take her for questioning. But Pannee doesn’t reveal anything. She remains stoic and ignorant. A mother’s love for her son drives her to take extreme steps. Towards the end Wan leaves her with some money- proceeds from the sale of their land. This is the moment of resolution between the mother and the daughter. Pannee reveals that she gave Wat more attention as he needed it more. He was the weaker amongst the two.

The father, Narong confesses- in a rare moment of being in proper senses- to the police that he killed Yoet, the husband, for the love of his daughter. In another instance when Wan comes to meet him at the permanent care home Narong tells her to stop putting on a facade of innocence and reminds her of the moment when she let her husband- pleading for help-  be butchered to death. Ultimately it is a parent thing-  extreme love for their children. They can go to any extent to protect them!

Pete’s Angle:

Police forensics cross check the reports and figure out that Dr. Wat’s locations matched exactly with the locations of the toothless bodies. Hence they issue an arrest warrant against Wat. Peet is transferred back to Bangkok. In the final scene he confronts Wan about hiding her brother and his presence at the lake. He tells her that her lie won’t last long.

Is There A Second Season?

In the final scene Wan is shown driving away past Changkhan village with her son Aim. She breaks away from her family to be with son and to start a new life. She’s shown driving away. There is no hint of a second season. Yet, with the killer still on the loose and the central characters still alive, one never knows! Watch out for this space.
