Indian sports biopics have explored cricket, wrestling, boxing, and more, but Zee5 is set to bring a groundbreaking chapter of Indian sports history to the screen. The official trailer for Sumo Didi, inspired by the extraordinary life of Hetal Dave – India’s first and only professional female sumo wrestler has dropped, and it promises an emotionally resonant, power-packed underdog story.
Led by a physically and emotionally transformed Shriyam Bhagnani, the trailer showcases a woman determined to make every single pound of her body count, defying societal prejudice, fat-phobia, and financial hardships to represent India on the international stage in Japan!
Shriyam Bhagnani looks rock solid as Hetal Dave in the Sumo Didi trailer. Putting on huge weight and muscle mass while mastering the technicalities of sumo wrestling, she is promising to bring an authentic athletic intensity to the film. She conveys a fierce grit that holds the entire trailer.

The trailer balances intense montages with lighthearted humor. It directly tackles the social commentary surrounding body weight in India, turning what society labels as a flaw into Hetal’s ultimate athletic superpower.
The supporting cast adds deep emotional layers to the narrative. They provide strong family dynamics. Having already earned critical acclaim at prestigious international platforms, Sumo Didi looks like a winner. It isn’t just a sports drama; it is an inspiring testament to breaking patriarchal boundaries and reclaiming self-worth.
What I love about Sumo Didi’s setup is that the film flips the very thing she’s mocked for into her greatest strength. That’s the emotional spine here, and the trailer makes it clear that the story is about resilience first and wrestling second. The film looks like the kind of film that could quietly grow on you. It doesn’t have the glitz of a big-budget sports spectacle, and it doesn’t seem to want it. What it has is a woman whose story is worth being told, and a lead actor who looks ready to tell it.
