This is a world where law does not exist, and goons rule like they are the kings! This is the blueprint of any regular gangster drama in this country – be it recently released Mirzapur The Movie in the theaters or Arshad Warsi’s Ghamasaan on Zee 5.

On paper, pairing Arshad Warsi and Pratik Gandhi in an intense, crime-versus-law conflict sounds like a winning proposition. Written with the ambition of crafting a dark, atmospheric gangster saga, director Tigmanshu Dhulia attempts to dissect political ambition, gang loyalty, and personal retribution in the heartlands of Bundelkhand. But does the film entertain and stands as an exciting story from someone who directed Paan Singh Tomar? I really doubt!

The story is a simple 2-line plot! Arshad Warsi is a kingpin in Bundelkhand who has his huge kingdom, and he is called Maharaaj. He rules the area with the help of the local police and politicians, unless the opposition party puts pressure, and a police officer, Aditya (Pratik Gandhi), is after his life! This cat-and-mouse chase becomes the story of the film. There are moments that genuinely come out strong while Aditya plans to trap Maharaaj, but does the film overall make sense as a gangster drama? Not so sure!

Arshad Warsi, as the dreaded dacoit, does not walk into this film, he stomps into it, dust and all, and for a good stretch. You instantly forget you’re watching an actor who spent a career being Bollywood’s most reliable comic sidekick. The Bundeli dialect, the body language, the unhurried menace – he has clearly done the homework, and it translates on screen! This is, without exaggeration, one of his most committed big-screen swings in years.

Pratik Gandhi matches him scene for scene as Aditya, the by-the-book STF officer sent to bring Maharaj down. Gandhi has built a career on quiet intensity, right from Harshad Mehta’s manic energy in Scam 1992. Here, he dives into a controlled presence that never tips into the over-the-top angry cop cliché the genre usually reaches for. The two actors share a handful of scenes that crackle purely because of what they’re doing with their presence rather than what the script gives them to say.

The supporting ensemble, including Rajpal Yadav and Ishita Dutta, delivers decent performances, but their characters are so vaguely written that they end up serving merely as plot devices rather than living, breathing figures within the world.
