Mike Flanagan is bringing his competencies back to the screen. This time with an even bigger franchise, The Exorcist. The director, who is famous for several horror outings and has been applauded by the King of Horror, Stephen King, for his prolific work in Doctor Sleep, is all set to reveal new evil. The upcoming film titled The Exorcist: Martyrs won’t just portray fear in a very new form, but it brings a new touch to the old franchise, as the movie revolves around murder, mystery, and possession.
For those unversed, the film in question hits the big screens on March 11, 2027. Written and helmed by Flanagan, the project will be produced by Blumhouse Productions, Atomic Monster, and Morgan Creek Entertainment. If you are already intrigued, here are a few more details about the new horror.

Besides the Jungle Book voice-over actress, the cast also includes Diane Lane, Lawrence Fishburne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Hamish Linklater, John Leguizamo, and Sasha Calle. Scott McNairy, John Gallagher Jr., and Jacobi Jupe will also be seen in the film.
The Exorcist: Martyrs Plot: What Is The Story About?
The Exorcist: Martyrs follows Detective Julie Miller (Johansson), a New York City homicide detective whose past comes back to haunt her after a disturbing new case emerges. Thirteen years earlier, Miller ended a reign of terror by a satanic serial killer named Father Sunday, a character that will be played by John Leguizamo. However, when another killer leaves a horrifying message written in an altar boy’s blood inside a church crypt, Miller is pulled back into a case that might have some connections to the darkness she thought she had left behind.
Johannson’s character will be guided by Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Father William, a former prison chaplain who heard Father Sunday’s final confession, and rookie detective Gina Restrepo. Sasha Calle, who is best known for portraying the first-ever live-action Supergirl, will play this role.
As the investigation progresses, the characters in the film stumble upon discoveries that have a disturbing connection between a lineage of serial killers and an evil force that goes beyond ordinary criminal activity. Interestingly, the film brings the two worlds together. Moreover, while it carries the elements of a supernatural horror, the latest Exorcist film will also act as a crime thriller.
The Exorcist: Martyrs: How Does It Fit Into The Franchise?
For those unversed, the Exorcist franchise began with William Friedkin’s 1973 horror classic, which followed a young girl, Regan MacNeil, and her terrifying experience with demonic possession. The film instantly became a major hit and a prime entry in the supernatural horror genre, eventually leading to several sequels, prequels, and later installments, including The Exorcist: Believer (2023).
However, it should be noted that The Exorcist: Martyrs is not a direct continuation of The Exorcist: Believer. Instead, director Mike Flanagan is developing a standalone story set within the established Exorcist universe.
As seen in the trailer, the movie introduces new characters, possibly setting up a new timeline within the same franchise. This is unlike the previous installments, which usually revolved around older characters, especially Father Damien Karras, Father Lankester Merrin, and others.
