Robert Pattinson starrer Primetime premiered at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival recently. Critics and others who saw the film have shared their first reactions on the social media platform X [formerly Twitter] ahead of its theatrical release. Lance Oppenheim has directed the movie, which is based on the 2007 Esquire article “Tonight on Dateline, This Man Will Die.” It features Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, and Phoebe Bridgers in supporting roles. The film is competing for the Golden Lion, having premiered in the main competition of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.

The real highlight has got to be Lance Oppenheim’s direction which blends archival footage with cctv and first person cameras among many other brilliant tricks and colourful sequences to create a cult infused drama that’s more terrifying to engage with when you realise how normal people you see everyday can very well be that monster as any human is capable of such evil.”

Josh Parham, another film critic, wrote, “PRIMETIME utilizes some bold aesthetics in its showcase of the psychological damage such a show thrusted upon its participants. Pattinson is his usual magnetic self, as is Weaver, but it’s Skyler Gisondo who steals the show with a layered performance. A bit tedious but engaging.”

Critic Paul Rai says, “PRIMETIME is a discomforting picture of how much our penchant for justice is distorted by a media machine hellbent on weaponizing our anxieties. Robert Pattinson is as immersive and compelling he’s ever been—nary a hint of self-awareness or exaggerated. He’s remarkable.”

Rotten Tomatoes Approved critic Dallas King wrote, “Immerse yourself in Primetime and you will need a good long shower afterwards to scrub yourself clean of the seedy grime that comes with this experience… in a good way. Pattinson is outstanding in this shocking but entertaining exposé that is impossible to peel your eyes away.”

Senior writer @THR David Canfield wrote, “Robert Pattinson is great in PRIMETIME, defining the movie’s discomfiting surrealism & very dark sense of humor. But Skyler Gisondo is revelatory—the film’s surprising, wounded heart, and the savviest choice made by Lance Oppenheim in a bold narrative debut.”

Vanity Fair writer Chris Murphy said, “Primetime had a stellar premiere at Venice. Pattinson delivers an intense go for broke performance going full “Call me Ishmael” in his pursuit to catch his whale. Merritt Weaver and Skyler Gisondo also excellent as brains and heart of the operation and Phoebe Bridgers good 2.”

What is the film about?

The film follows journalist Chris Hansen, who, after two years as the host of the hit reality crime series To Catch a Predator, becomes increasingly obsessed with exposing online child sex predators while battling demonic hallucinations, guilt over an extramarital affair, and the fallout from a botched sting operation that ultimately threatens to bring his successful show crashing down. Primetime will be released in the theaters on September 25.
