The Odyssey Japan Box Office: Christopher Nolan’s Epic Beats Michael In Early Previews, Eyes Strong Opening

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is running strong in international markets as it enters its eighth week at the box office. In fact, it has crossed the $1 billion mark overseas. Even as the film makes waves in different markets, it is set to begin its journey in Japan. The film will debut in the Asian country on September 11.

The Odyssey Japan Early Previews

Ahead of its release on September 11, the film had early previews on select IMAX screens. It was the first round of early previews, and the response was promising. The epic earned an estimated $215K on Friday through limited screenings. This was higher than the early previews of Michael in Japan. The successful biopic earned $175K in early previews in Japan.

Owing to the success of The Odyssey, the film is already opening to strong word of mouth. According to an update by Luiz Fernando, the film has received a 4.4 score from audiences who attended these previews, equivalent to an A on CinemaScore (almost an A+). This marks an all-time best in Nolan’s career, beating The Dark Knight’s current 4.2 rating.

The Odyssey In China

Meanwhile, in the other Asian country, The Odyssey was released in theaters on August 14. Despite battling a low screen count, the film is on track to become the highest-grossing non-sequel Hollywood film in the country. Today, the epic will beat Free Guy to achieve the milestone. On its fourth Friday, the film earned a strong $1.2 million despite playing on just 18K screens. In just 22 days, the film has earned $94.1 million on a limited number of screens.

Christopher Nolan‘s directorial is also looking to become the first Hollywood non-sequel to cross the $100 million mark in China. Free Guy was just $5 million away from scoring $100 million at the Chinese box office.

The Odyssey, released on July 17, has surpassed $1.58 billion at the worldwide box office and is expected to reach $1.7 billion in its global run.
