Often while discussing facts like these, we ignore the power of well-made R rated films. It is often mentioned by people, that making a film just for adults will lessen its chances at the box office. While making an adult film truly restricts the age group, if it’s well made then people of that age group come in maximum numbers to watch that film.
Below is a list of R rated films which prove that even these films can storm the box office if they are well made.
Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker did huge talking at the box office as it released last year. The film was a rage worldwide and became the first R rated film to cross the $1 billion mark. In India, it managed to score big despite clashing with big Bollywood release like War. The lifetime worldwide business of Joker was $1,074 million.

The makers of Deadpool took a calculated risk as they made a sci-fi comedy in which the lead actor uses cuss words. The Ryan Reynolds led Deadpool 2 was the sequel of Deadpool and spin-off of the X-Men series. The film did a business of $786 million according to Box Office Mojo.

In 2003, when The Matrix Reloaded released it created huge waves. The R rated film was banned in Egypt because of its controversial content. However, the sci-fi film did a worldwide business of $742 million.
The horror film released in 2017 was based on Stephen King’s book of the same name. Starring Bill Skarsgard along with Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff and others It was loved by the genre junkies. It did a business of $702 million worldwide.

The Chinese fantasy comedy released in 2016 and stands as 10th highest-grossing R rated film worldwide. Directed by Stephen Chow, the film did a worldwide business of $554 million.
