The Magic Faraway Tree is a fantasy-adventure film directed by Ben Gregor, starring Andrew Garfield in the lead role. It was released earlier in the United Kingdom, but in North America, the film opened on Friday and is poised to set a new record for Spider-Man actor Garfield. It is poised to have the lowest opening weekend at the North American box office of any Garfield film. Keep scrolling for the deets.

It is based on Enid Blyton’s book series, The Faraway Tree. The film features Garfield alongside Claire Foy, Nonso Anozie, Nicola Coughlan, Jessica Gunning, Jennifer Saunders, and Rebecca Ferguson. It received strong ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it 79% on the Tomatometer. The audience rating is slightly higher with 80% on the Popcornmeter.

The Magic Faraway Tree’s projected debut at the North American box office

Despite such an ensemble cast, The Magic Faraway Tree is tracking to score one of the lowest opening weekends at the box office in North America. It is on track to earn just $1.15 million at the domestic box office in its debut weekend from only 1,600 theaters. It is not enough for it to land a place within the domestic top 5 rankings.

Lowest opening weekend for Andrew Garfield

According to ScreenRant‘s report, the movie is on track to have the worst opening weekend at the box office in North America for Andrew Garfield. His previous worst opening weekend was his 2007 war movie Lions for Lambs, which collected $6.7 million. Garfield has appeared in relatively few movies that opened widely in theaters; this is his 7th such release, and its projected debut will still be his career low.

According to the report, his previous six releases opened in more than 2k theaters, giving them an advantage in total box office earnings. The Magic Faraway Tree is still performing worse on a per-theater basis. Therefore, it is set to be Andrew Garfield‘s lowest per-screen average by a wide margin.

What is the film about?

The movie has already collected $32.2 million at the international box office, and two more sequels are also in the works.
