Ryan Gosling is one of the biggest and most bankable stars in Hollywood, set to make his Star Wars debut next year. Star Wars: Starfighter marks Gosling’s Star Wars debut, and it is already making news with its production cost. It is reportedly one of the most expensive films ever made in Hollywood. Therefore, we are calculating its break-even based on the net production cost, which is after the tax incentives. Keep scrolling for the deets.

It is an ambitious Star Wars movie by Disney, and after the box-office failure of The Mandalorian and Grogu, it is crucial for it to be financially successful. The space-opera adventure is directed by Shawn Levy and set five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It features a strong star cast comprising Ryan Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

Star Wars: Starfighter budget & break-even analysis

Disney is making a massive investment in Star Wars: Starfighter, with the upcoming film emerging as one of the franchise’s most expensive installments. According to a new Forbes report, the movie had already racked up $226.5 million in production costs by January 31, 2026, based on financial filings from its UK production company.

However, after accounting for UK tax incentives, the net production cost comes down to $175 million. Despite this reduction, Star Wars: Starfighter had spent more at this stage of production than Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). Only Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) had recorded higher production costs by a comparable point, with its UK production company reporting expenses of £281.6 million.

It is worth noting that the $226.5 million figure is not the film’s final production budget. It represents the amount spent up to January 31, 2026, before tax incentives. The report also reveals that $17.6 million went toward staff costs, while the film employed an average of 239 people per month. Based on Star Wars: Starfighter’s current net production cost of $175 million, its estimated theatrical break-even target would be around $437.5 million worldwide, using the standard 2.5× budget rule. This calculation is an early estimate based on the current net production cost and is subject to change.

Ryan Gosling-starring Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to be released on May 28, 2027.
