Thalapathy Vijay’s swansong, Jana Nayagan, has ended its theatrical run as a major disappointment at the worldwide box office. Being the farewell of the Kollywood superstar, the magnum opus was expected to score big, but failed to do so. The delayed release and an online leak had already undermined its potential, and things worsened due to mixed-to-negative reviews. The political action thriller was the most expensive film of Vijay’s career, with an estimated budget of 350-375 crore. With such an exorbitant cost and being a partial remake of Bhagavanth Kesari, the film was already a risky affair. Unfortunately, it received mixed-to-negative feedback from audiences, thus cutting short the biggie’s potential.

Jana Nayagan ended its run in India with a net collection of 198.32 crore, which equals 234.05 crore gross. Of this, the largest chunk, as expected, came from Tamil Nadu, where it amassed approx 146.16 crore net. Karnataka was the second-biggest contributor with around 26 crore net.

In the overseas market, the Thalapathy Vijay starrer grossed 93.15 crore. Combining the Indian gross and overseas gross, the closing worldwide box office collection stands at 327.2 crore gross. This number looks good in isolation, but not enough for a film of the scale and stature of Jana Nayagan.
