She came, she saw and she conquered. Well, for quite a few years at least in the world of Bollywood. Sunny Leone, a popular adult star, made her foray into Bollywood with Jism. And no, unlike popular misconception, she wasn’t introduced to the film industry by Mahesh Bhatt; it was instead his daughter Pooja Bhatt who launched her. Pooja, along with her business partner Dino Morea, produced Jism 2 and then also went on to direct the film.
There was considerable hype around the film when it was released exactly 8 years back on 2nd August 2012. The pre-release promotional and marketing campaign was right on the dot, the songs were sensual (as was expected from the Jism franchise, which had kick-started with Bipasha Basu and John Abraham) and Sunny was splashed all over the media for many weeks prior to her arrival on the big screen.
The results were there to be seen as Jism 2 took a very good opening of 7.46 crores. For a female centric film, and that too A rated with Sunny Leone as a leading lady (which was thought to be a taboo), it was pretty much a jackpot that Pooja Bhatt had hit. I personally remember watching the film on the very first day at a posh up-market multiplex in Bangalore and nearly half the crowd comprising of young college going girl and corporate women. It was a pleasant surprise indeed.
No wonder, despite not-so-flattering reviews, the film stayed on to be quite stable at the box office and netted 20.45 crores over the weekend. There was a considerable fall post that though as the film folded up at 35.19 crores soon after. Still, the job was more than done for everyone associated with the film as good profits were already made and Sunny Leone further became a household name.
In the 8 years that followed, Sunny went on to feature in eight more films as a leading lady and her only success there has been Ragini MMS 2, yet another franchise. Rest all including Jackpot, Ek Paheli Leela (which is actually her best film till date), Kuch Kuch Locha Hai, Mastizaade, One Night Stand, Beiimaan Love and Tera Intezar have all failed at the box office. She has done well in her item numbers as well with ‘Laila Main Laila‘ with Shah Rukh Khan in Raees being her biggest chartbuster till date.
It has been a while since Sunny Leone was seen in a film as a leading lady and one waits to see if in near future she would be signing a film soon. However, Jism 2 would indeed remain as a strong reason for her to celebrate.
