What if you had to marry the same person 16 times consecutively? No, this is not some priest-suggested solution to get rid of Mangal Dosha or some other dosha. This is just fate playing a cruel joke on you. Indian weddings can be truly cumbersome. They involve major logistics, nagging relatives and neighbors, catering woes, last-minute arrangements, and many more hurdles. Going through this once in a lifetime can be too much. Maybe that’s why they are called memories for a lifetime. Don’t know.
But anyway, the point is that it can get too tiring. But what if you had to watch some other man trying to live a married life with his wife after getting married to her repeatedly? Dhoomaketu is exactly that. Except, the repetition of the day in the film is by design. Sudhi Maddison’s directorial Dhoomaketu is a time-loop film. Sajin Gopu plays the protagonist, Kuttan, who keeps repeating the same day- his wedding day- due to a scientific event. He keeps getting married to Sharmila (Nikhila Vimal) for 16 straight days, but it never goes beyond their first evening.
Despite this repetitive element, it is an enjoyable and engaging watch. Here are 3 reasons it should be on your watch list.
Trending
1. A Mystery In The Loop
Each day also presents the protagonist with a chance to look beyond the ordinary. Kuttan has to solve a mystery he is totally unaware of, with vague clues thrown at him. This makes the film all the more interesting as we get to see him solve the mystery one day at a time. It feels like a game where, if he does not crack the mystery by night, he has to return to the starting point.
2. Performances
Sajin Gopu plays Kuttan. He brings Kuttan’s frustration and helplessness to life brilliantly. Enough for the audience to feel it and want to be a part of his journey. Nikhila Vimal has a delightful presence. She has very little agency even though the primary mystery revolves around her. Depsite that, the actress commands attention with her performance and a brilliant screen presence. The film also has interesting performances by Siddharth Bharathan, Shine Tom Chacko and Ganapathi.
3. Presentation
Even though the days repeat, we get tiny differences in them. Routine can be boring, but what if you could anticipate the events of your life? The first time the day repeats, Kuttan is baffled, and we hop into his confusion. Slowly, as the day passes, he confides in his best friend, and his attempt is to make him believe what is happening. But it’s the night of his first wedding that gets quite interesting.
Even as the day progresses, one thing that changes is his first night. Even though the days are repetitive, they never feel boring. In fact, you start living with Kuttan and feel like you are a part of his mysterious days.
