Kunchacko Boban’s latest Malayalam film, Unmadham, is a psychological thriller. The film sees him play an aspiring movie writer whose day job is that of a police officer. The film centers around Shelly (Kunchacko Boban), a police officer who dreams of becoming a scriptwriter. After taking a year-long sabbatical to focus on writing, repeated rejections force him to return to police duty to support his family. Soon, he transfers to a station where he discovers a mysterious cold case that people believe is cursed, and anyone who investigates it suffers physical or psychological consequences. Seeing the case as an opportunity to finally find a story for his script, Shelly secretly begins investigating it despite his colleagues’ warnings. However, as he delves deeper into the case, the investigation begins to consume him, affecting his grip on reality and sanity. The film follows Shelly’s attempt to solve the case while pursuing his dream of becoming a successful filmmaker.

How Did Shelly Crack The Final Leg Of The Case?
Shelly takes on a case everyone at his police station dreads. He does this to get the script that could give him a break in the film industry. Despite multiple warnings from his police colleagues, Shelly ignores them and pursues the investigation. Without informing his seniors, he secretly carries on the investigation. However, as his colleague warned, the case begins to consume him, and he starts to lose his mind. He gets so invested in the case that he starts seeing visuals of the victim, Keerthana. However, he is unable to distinguish between reality and his visions.
Shelly refuses to let go of the case even as people around him dismiss him as mad. While he has completed 90% of the case, he just needs to crack the last leg and secure the evidence needed to bring it to a conclusion. Towards the climax, Shelly just accepts the vision he has of Keerthana. He is aware that the night Keerthana was killed, two other people also died. However, he requires evidence to prove it. Saying that a ghost helped now does not work in his favor. In the climax, he loses control of the car, and it takes him to the location where the crime was committed. The ghost points him to the exact location where the bodies of the two other people who were murdered lay — a very Om Shanti Om-styled climax, minus some logic.

Had Shelly Actually Lost His Mind?
Shelly begins to lose control of reality and dreams. He visits a doctor, who diagnoses him with a mental health condition. This scene gave hope that his visions of the victim would have a logical, or at least somewhat logical, conclusion. However, the makers opt for Shelly’s conviction of the ghost’s vision and its help in figuring out the matter. However, the film never explains how Keerthana’s ghost knows where the bodies were buried. She runs away after witnessing the death of her boyfriend and his uncle. However, she never sees them getting buried, and the film never addresses this aspect. Additionally, the climax does not address Shelly’s mental well-being after a ghost takes charge of his car. It lets the audience believe that the ghost was real, and only that helped Shelly solve the case.
Unmadham’s second half feels quite rushed and fails to address the mental health element. It also chooses to believe that the case file was cursed. In the beginning, it felt like the filmmakers would debunk the superstition and come up with a solution to the eerie activities surrounding the case file. However, the filmmakers retain the curse element, which honestly felt like a very convenient route to take.
