It’s time for the women to rule! Very few movies or series have explored what Netflix’s upcoming series, Akka, dares to explore. Whenever the 1980s are represented on screen, it is usually through angry young men and gangsters driven by deep-rooted vengeance. Women, meanwhile, have largely been portrayed as damsels in distress. However, with Akka, Netflix aims to present a world where women make the rules and rule over it. They hold the most powerful positions and decide what happens in business and at home.

Keerthy Suresh and Radhika Apte will share the screen for the first time in the upcoming series. While Keerthy assumes the titular role, Radhika will be seen as Rudhra, the woman who challenges Akka’s authority. We see anger and rage among the women as they go about their daily business, which involves money, power, knives, and guns.

The trailer introduces us to Pernuru, a land set in 1985, where the story is set. Keerthy Suresh plays Bhavani (Akka), the ruler of a clan that holds women in high regard. Her queendom is surrounded by fierce women who are unafraid of bloodshed and who follow the law of the land. However, Bhavani also faces threats from men in Bombay, who have different ways of conducting business. Her biggest enemy, though, is Rudhra, an equally ambitious woman who is determined to destroy Bhavani and her empire.

The setting of Pernuru is nothing short of majestic. The women are adorned in traditional sarees and heavy gold jewelry. But none of this prevents them from being agile as they take on their enemies. The land is also deeply rooted in its own traditions and culture. While Akka features a love story, the people of Pernuru do not believe in compromise in marriage. The women show no mercy in their land and have strict rules for those who betray them.

On the other hand, there’s Netflix’s darling, Radhika Apte. Her sole mission is to destroy Bhavani’s empire. She has a look that is distinct from that of the women of Pernuru. While the women of Pernuru rely on their physical prowess, Rudhra relies on her intelligence in battle. It will be an interesting clash to witness between Bhavani and Rudhra.

The trailer ends with the gorgeous-looking ladies standing face-to-face, guns drawn. Akka presents an interesting premise led by female characters. Both Keerthy and Radhika Apte bring the intensity their roles demand. The music is also quite different, drawing the audience into this distinct world created and ruled by women.

Akka marks the latest collaboration between Netflix and YRF Entertainment, following acclaimed titles such as The Romantics, The Railway Men, Maharaj, and Mandala Murders. Discover who commands the throne when Akka premieres on October 30, only on Netflix!
