What’s Good: Jason Statham’s ability to play the same role, and still be entertaining is fascinating and this movie is just the latest example of it.

What’s Bad: There isn’t as much action as it should be, and the feeling of having watched this movie before never leaves you.

Loo Break: You can take a break at any point during the second act, but the movie is short, so there might not be a need to.

Watch or Not?: Only watch if you are a Jason Statham fan.

Jason Statham is quite a fascinating individual in the movie industry, he has basically made himself his own genre, by delivering a type of movie that no one else is willing to make at this level, and at this quantity, with the actor releasing a movie basically every single year, and you like it or not, his level of consistency is commendable, with this year Mutiny being just a classic Jason Statham movie, so you know what to expect.

Mutiny Movie Review: Script Analysis

There is not much to talk about in terms of script for a Jason Statham, the genre doesn’t really focus on story, characters, or worldbuilding in any shape or form; the story is only there to serve as a vehicle for Jason Statham and the action the actor wants to put on the screen, and by that metric the story in this film is quite serviceable, it does serve as an excuse for the action as it creates a perfect situation for bullets to go flying and explosions to be happening.

And that is it, so, if you are looking for a piece of filmmaker that tries to create a powerful character study, or create a very detailed and interesting world, Mutiny is not the film for you, as it is set in the real world, and real world things will be happening; of course, there will be enough bending of audiences expectations for the action to settle and make sense but unlike John Wick, there is no worldbuilding to be had in here.

Jason Statham plays the loner, the quiet man of the hour once again, and it is a role that he had truly perfected, as we don’t really need to learn a lot about the character to be willing to follow from beginning to end, and in this case, see him take revenge for his boss’ death, and also get into trouble with some very dangerous people, who don’t know they have messed with the wrong guy.

There is definitely a sort of comfort to be had while watching a Jason Statham, there is no denying that, but I wish he would risk doing something different, as he is actually so much more than this role. He is a very good comedian, for example, but we never see him take advantage of that in his own movies, maybe someday.

Mutiny Movie Review: Star Performance

Jason Statham is the star of the movie, there is no other way around but the supporting cast is good enough to face Statham and make him look good, and that is an ability that is often overlooked by audiences and critics, the ability to enhance a movie by knowing how to be a secondary character, to not steal the star’s spotlight, and to serve the movie in the best possible way. 

Annabelle Wallis does exactly that here, and while I have never been a huge fan of her work, she is quite solid in this, and does her role well, but it is also cool to see kind of new faces, and being a huge fan of The Last Kingdom, it was great seeing Arnas Fedaravicius on screen once more, he should have a lot more work going his way, he is a good actor, and has great presence, but Hollywood is a tough business.
