The Social Reckoning is heading to theaters on October 9, with Aaron Sorkin taking over as director after writing The Social Network. While the upcoming film returns to the world of Facebook, Sorkin has now explained why David Fincher, who directed the 2010 film, did not return for the movie.
Sorkin revealed that he actually wanted Fincher to direct The Social Reckoning. However, Fincher’s exclusive deal with Netflix became a roadblock. Sorkin also had another reason for wanting the film to arrive sooner rather than later.
Why David Fincher Didn’t Direct The Social Reckoning
In a recent interview, Sorkin said, “I was my second choice to direct it. I wanted David to direct it, but [he] couldn’t.” He revealed that David couldn’t direct the film because of his exclusive deal with Netflix. “Even if he could have somehow gotten Netflix’s permission to go work at Sony, I didn’t want The Social Reckoning to come out a year after the midterm elections. I didn’t think we were going to be in the mood anymore. I wanted it to come out now,” he said. Sorkin also revealed he sent the script to Fincher when he completed it.

Sorkin further continued, “Fincher was the first person to read the script. He’s been a very enthusiastic support person, and he was talking about how it’s not going to be hard to do this movie, and the only person really who could bend us over a table is Jesse, and we just all assumed Jesse was going [to play Zuckerberg again].”
What Is The Social Reckoning About?
Based on the events that gave rise to the Wall Street Journal’s shocking 2021 investigative series, ‘The Facebook Files,’ the film tells the true story of Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a young Facebook engineer, who enlists the help of Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White), a Wall Street Journal reporter, to go on a dangerous journey that ends up blowing the whistle on the social network’s most guarded secrets.
The Social Reckoning is directed by Aaron Sorkin and is scheduled to release on October 9.
