Mammootty and Adoor Gopalakrishnan are all set to reunite after 32 years. The megastar, who was last seen in Patriot, has two very distinct films lined up for release in 2026. In November, he will be seen in the Tamil film Om, followed by Padayaatra in December. Both films are scheduled to release within two weeks of each other, with Mammootty and Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Padayaatra hitting theatres on December 4.

Padayaatra Opening Day Prediction

Dulquer Salmaan’s production house, Wayfarer Films, is distributing the Malayalam film. As a content-driven film, it will largely have to rely on word of mouth. Mammootty plays a doctor in the film, which explores an intense subject. Unlike his previous release, Patriot, and his upcoming Tamil film, Om, the megastar will not be seen in a massy avatar. As a result, Padayaatra might register a modest opening, with collections coming largely from Kerala. However, the film could gain momentum depending on audience response and word of mouth.

For Padayaatra to enter the top 10 Mollywood openers of 2026, it will need to earn at least 3.05 crore net in India. Currently, Kattalan ranks 10th on the list. Mammootty‘s Patriot already ranks second among the highest-opening Malayalam films of 2026. Padayaatra could also make it to the top 10 opening-day list, thanks to the superstar’s star power and his reunion with Adoor Gopalakrishnan.

More About Padayaatra

Mammootty and Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s collaborations have earned the duo National Awards. In fact, Mammootty won his first two National Awards for the veteran filmmaker’s Mathilukal and Vidheyan. Padayaatra also appears to have a compelling story at its core. The film will see Mammootty play a doctor in a small town, where a series of events leads to him being accused of sedition.

Reportedly, Padayaatra is inspired by a true story. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Mammootty said, “I have even met a doctor in Wayanad. He takes his scooter, his wife, and his medicines. He goes to the forest and treats people.”

It will be interesting to see how Adoor Gopalakrishnan brings this story to the screen. The film appears to steer clear of larger-than-life elements, relying instead on strong characters and storytelling.
