Jessica Chastain’s horror film, Other Mommy, was released in theaters on October 9. The film held the #1 position at the domestic box office in its opening week. However, due to poor word of mouth, the film has slipped at the box office in its second week.

The R-rated horror film had a strong opening weekend, which helped boost its total collection. Moreover, owing to its low production costs, the film is expected to be profitable despite the poor word of mouth. However, in its second weekend, the film has been pushed to the #5 spot at the domestic box office.

How Much Did Other Mommy Earn At The Box Office So Far?

Throughout its opening week, Other Mommy remained at #1 at the US box office. However, on its second Friday, the film earned just $2.6 million, marking a massive drop from its opening-day collection. To put this into perspective, the film opened with a strong $12.5 million. Consequently, its second-Friday collection reflected a 79.6% drop from its opening day, signaling poor reception. Notably, this decline occurred despite the film retaining its screens during its first week.

Other Mommy’s second Friday collection was behind those of films like The Black Phone ($4 million), Longlegs ($3.8 million), The Exorcist: Believer ($3.8 million), and Scream 5 ($3.7 million). The film has reached a cumulative total of $39.1 million at the US box office after eight days. It collected just $17.9 million in the overseas market, bringing its worldwide total to $56.9 million.

More About Other Mommy

Based on the bestselling novel by Josh Malerman, Other Mommy is a shocking new nightmare that follows Bela, a young girl who forms a relationship with a sinister entity in her home that looks uncannily like her own mother. As the entity befriends Bela, she soon finds herself being hunted by the very presence that has entered her life.

It is rare for any film, much less a horror film, to be narratively structured around a young child. Making matters even more challenging, Other Mommy is told from the perspective of seven-year-old Bela, who appears in almost every scene. The role demands a depth and range of emotion that few child actors could achieve. It is no exaggeration to say that the film hinged on this casting decision.
