Double roles have traditionally worked in Bollywood, especially when they are a part of masala films. In his career, Akshay Kumar has enacted double roles in quite a few films. However, his biggest blockbuster in such a set up is Rowdy Rathore.
Today, it is 8 years since the release of the Prabhu Deva directed film which was produced by none other than Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Though the man has been known to make films that have a classic appeal to them, Rowdy Rathore was an action entertainer coming from his production house where he picked Ravi Teja’s Telugu hit Vikramarkudu as the source material.
The end result was fiery indeed as Akshay Kumar rocked the show in both avtars, that of an honest cop and then the street-smart conman. The film was right up Prabhudeva’s alley too and together the men ensured that audiences got all the action, drama, thrills, dialoguebaazi, romance and music in a single film. Sonakshi Sinha was more than glad to step in as a leading lady too and clearly enjoyed her time in front of the camera.
Nasser played the villain in this out and out commercial entertainer that boasted of a fantastic promo that struck a chord with the masses. The songs too did the trick as music by Sajid-Wajid worked big time before the release itself, what with ‘Chinta Ta’, ‘Aa Re Pritam Pyaare’ and ‘Dhadang Dhadang’ turning out to be chartbusters. Unfortunately, Wajid is no more today.
On the release of the film, Akshay Kumar was riding high on the success of Housefull 2 which had released just a few weeks back and had turned out to be his first 100 Crore Club affair. Rowdy Rathore turned out to be even better as it emerged as a bonafide blockbuster by collecting 133.25 crores at the box office after enjoying a very good opening day of 15.10 crores.
Some of the dialogues and scenes from the film are memorable till date and though on and off one hears about the sequel being made soon as well, one waits for an official announcement. Rest assured, it would be solid dhamaka if it happens indeed!
