Being a national holiday, Independence Day has proved to be huge at the Indian box office. Over the years, many big Bollywood films have made it to the cinemas on I Day or around it. And the best part is that most of them have totally worked at the box office.
As the world is still struggling with pandemic this year, India too is no different and has seen no theatrical release on this Independence Day. Let’s take a look at the highest I-day grossers so far:
1) Mission Mangal
Akshay Kumar’s first 200 crores grosser, Mission Mangal released at the box office with huge expectations on Independence Day 2019. Directed by Jagan Shakti, the film also had Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Kirti Kulhari, Nithya Menen & Sharman Joshi in main roles.
The film clashed with John Abraham led Batla House but thanks to great word of mouth, it still managed to do a lifetime business of 200.16 crores.
Mission Mangal is the highest-grossing Independence Day release of Bollywood.
2) Ek Tha Tiger
Salman Khan & Katrina Kaif led Ek Tha Tiger smashed the box office as it hit cinemas back in 2012. The action romantic film took a historic start and broke so many records. With a lifetime business of 198 crores, Ek Tha Tiger has been top-grossing Independence Day film for 7 years but was replaced year by Mission Mangal.
3) Singham Returns
Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Singham Returns released on 15th August 2014. 7) Batla House
Batla House got severe competition from Mission Mangal as it released on I-Day 2019. However thanks to very good word of mouth, it managed to do a lifetime business of 97.18 crores. The John Abraham led film proved to be his highest-grossing solo film ever.
8) Satyameva Jayate
Satyameva Jayate also got stiff competition from Gold but it had its own merits and hence did extremely well at mass centres. The John Abraham starrer and Milap Zaveri directed film did a business of 89.05 crores.
Akshay Kumar’s first collaboration with Dharma for Brothers was highly anticipated release of 2015. Directed by Karan Malhotra and starring Sidharth Malhotra, Jacqueline Fernandez & Jackie Shroff along with Akshay, the film did a lifetime business of 82.47 crores.
10) Chak De! India
Now, this has to be one of the most iconic Independence Day releases. Back in 2007, when Shah Rukh Khan’s Chak De India released it amazed the industry with a lifetime business of 67.50 crores. The film was one of the top grossers that year and is still one of the most loved films by Indians.
