If it weren’t for the pandemic, Marvel fans would’ve got to watch Scarlett Johansson’s, Black Widow. After being a part of MCU for at least 10 years, ScarJo got her first solo film. Hence, it is a big deal for all fans. But we all have to wait longer to know the story of our beloved Natasha Romanoff.
We all bid goodbye to Natasha in Avengers: Endgame. Scarlett Johansson’s character sacrificed herself so that Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye could get the Soul Stone. Her death broke people’s hearts. But they were also mad at Marvel for not giving a farewell to Black Widow. But one doesn’t have to blame the writers of Russo Brothers for it. It’s was the Jojo Rabbit actress who said Natasha needs no funeral.
This revelation was made by BW director Cate Shortland. In an interview with Empire, Cate shared, “In Endgame, the fans were upset that Natasha did not have a funeral. Whereas Scarlett, when I spoke to her about it, said Natasha wouldn’t have wanted a funeral. She’s too private, and anyway, people don’t really know who she is. So what we did in this film was allow the ending to be the grief the individuals felt, rather than a big public outpouring. I think that’s a fitting ending for her.”
The director also made interesting revelations about the film and Florence Pugh. As seen in the trailer, Pugh plays Yelena Belova in the film. Now that Natasha is dead in MCU, the baton of Black Widow will be passed on to her. About the same, Cate Shortland revealed, “[Kevin Feige] realised that the audience would expect an origin story so, of course, we went in the opposite direction. And we didn’t know how great Florence Pugh would be. We knew she would be great, but we didn’t know how great. Scarlett is so gracious, like, ‘Oh, I’m handing her the baton.’ So it’s going to propel another female storyline.”
