Resident Evil continues to rule the North American box office, holding on to the No. 1 spot for five consecutive days. Despite facing strong competition from several new releases and losing some PLF screens, Zack Cregger’s R-rated video game adaptation has set another franchise record on its second Wednesday.

Released on September 18 by Columbia Pictures, Resident Evil has maintained its original theater count of nearly 3,700 locations. The movie, made on a reported budget of $75 million, has now grossed $204.6 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Resident Evil Keeps Its Domestic Box Office Lead

North America has contributed the biggest share of that total, accounting for $110.6 million, or 54.1% of the worldwide gross. The movie opened to a strong $60 million before taking a 61.7% drop in its second weekend, bringing in $23 million during its second three-day frame.

The weekday numbers initially followed a similar pattern. Resident Evil made $2 million on Monday and $3 million on Tuesday, down 60.5% and 56.2%, respectively, from the corresponding days of the previous week.

Wednesday brought a welcome boost. The movie earned $2.3 million, setting a new franchise record for a second Wednesday. It also posted its best hold so far, dropping only 48.9% from the previous Wednesday.

The international market has also continued to add to the movie’s impressive run, contributing $93.9 million so far. With its worldwide total now at $204.6 million, Resident Evil has already crossed its reported $187.5 million break-even point. It also marks Cregger’s second consecutive big-screen horror success following last year’s Weapons.

Resident Evil Faces Tough Competition Ahead of 3rd Weekend

The movie has further strengthened its place in the franchise by becoming the highest-grossing Resident Evil film in North America, surpassing the domestic totals of Resident Evil: Afterlife and Resident Evil: Apocalypse.

Now heading into its third weekend, Resident Evil, starring Austin Abrams, will have another test ahead. Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast and Robert Pattinson’s PrimeTime are among the new competition, while holdover releases such as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey continue to draw audiences to theaters.
