In a year which has seen quite a few films succeeding at the box office, whether belonging to small, medium or high budget, it has indeed been a rude outcome with Chakravyuh, Ajab Gazabb Love as well as Rush going down at the box office with not much of a fight. Though it was a given, especially after the film hit the screens, that Rush wouldn’t be able to survive, one just hoped that the remaining two would do better. However strange are the ways of the box office and this was evidenced yet again with both coming to a premature end despite some decent to good reviews and word of mouth coming their way.
Collectively, these three films accumulated just a little over 25 crores between them during the entire week which is less than what Student Of The Year had managed in its opening weekend itself. The result was seen in the second week run of Karan Johar’s bromantic drama which dominated yet again with an impressive continued run. However that wasn’t the case to be for the new releases with Rush turning out to be the biggest casualty at mere 3.5 crores coming in. The film would fold up under the 4 crore mark which is less than half of what Emraan Hashmi’s films earn on their opening day now!
As for Ajab Gazabb Love, it is rather surprising to see the film just not managing to stand up. With collections that fell short of the 7 crore mark, the family romcom wasn’t quite panned by anyone and ‘aam junta’ was fine as well with what played on screen for those two hours. The film’s lead pair of Jackky Bhagnani and Nidhi Subbaiah were acknowledged for their act as well but the cheers weren’t really heard amongst the audience. The film may just about manage better business on satellite and home video though due to its clean appeal.
On the other hand Chakravyuh could just have managed better results for itself but lack of enhanced buzz and momentum around the promotion proved to be it’s undoing. After a lukewarm opening, it just couldn’t gather itself even though reviews were positive. Moreover pre-Diwali celebrations have already kick-started and the heavy message and treatment of the film can be considered as a deterrent as well. Whatever be the case, the fact remains that this well made film by Prakash Jha and some notable acts by it’s lead cast hasn’t reached out to the audience as only 15 crore odd came in one week.
