What has been outstanding about Raanjhnaa is the earthy soundtrack by A.R Rahman with lyrics by Irshad Kamil. The Colour Yellow Pictures and Eros International movie is awaiting a June 21st release. For the Rahman fanatics who were left a tad bit disappointed by Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Raanjhnaa is more than welcome. Keeping in mind the whole North Indian street set up, the music is already a sensation. However, Rahman did notagree straightaway to compose for this Anand L. Rai project. The script had to be re– written entirely by Rai himself to give a clear contextual idea to the legendary composer.
Rahman has stated that the fascination around the ancient city of Benaras and its suburbs come alive through the classical folk genre that the Academy Award winner maestro experiments with in Raanjhnaa after he was reportedly charmed by the script which he had been skeptic about in the beginning . A.R. Rahman’s tribute to Ustad Bismillah Khan comes with the Shehnai scores that liven up the Raanjhnaa soundtrack. If all this isn’t enough to consider Raanhjnaa a 21st century Bollywood musical masterpiece, the movie has investors like Sony Music and Eros International coming together for its soundtrack production, management and marketing.
The Filmfare Award winner (for Naadaan Parindey from the 2011 Bollywood movie Rockstar) lyricist and poet Irshad Kamil makes a wave with lyrics that truly match Rahman’s composition. However, this will not be the first time for Kamil and Rahman for getting together to compose for a Bollywood project.
With the abundance of singers in the Indian Film Industry, it was quite interesting to notice the frenetic search Raanjhnaa makers put up, to find a voice that suited Kapoor. The ghazal prince, Jaswinder Singh lends his vocals alongside Shiraz Uppal, the Pak singer who essentially follows rock and pop genres, to the title track. It is needless to say how varied and vibrant the entire compositional set – up for Raanjhnaa’s soundtrack is turning out to be. Javed Ali, Keerthi Sagathia and Pooja Vaidyanath come together for ”Tum Tak” – the feverishly romantic number that is already popular in almost all micro blogging and networking sites. Few inside gossips say Shiraj Uppal was found to be the best one for the number among the other Pak vocalists who were earlier contacted by the crew. However, no reliable confirmations are available as to which vocalists or bands are being talked about in this context.
To paraphrase Ilayaraja’s comments on Rahman in a 2009 interview, Rahman truly is phenomenal and Raanjhnaa’s makings show it might be at par with earlier works by Rahman that changed the commercial music compositional scenario in India for good, during the late 20th century
We have expectations from Himanshu Sharma, the Tanu Weds Manu man, for a script that does justice to the expectations around Raanjhnaa. Anand L. Rai had directed Tanu Wed Manu. Considering the 2011 success of the film, one can only expect the greatest from Raanjhnaa.
On the same date of release for Raanjhnaa, a Tamil version of the movie will be released, named Ambikapathy.
Do let us know what your expectations are from Raanjhnaa as a musical masterpiece?
