Akshay Kumar has come in support of a campaign which is the need of the hour, a campaign which will be aiming to provide sanitary pads and kits to female daily wage workers affected by the lockdown. The initiative is led by Samarpan, a group of doctors and civil servants working to serve migrant workers and daily-wage earners. The NGO has teamed up with Varun Sheth and actor Kunal Kapoor.
Samarpan has distributed 2.5 million meals and dry rations for a month, 25,000 milk packets and 19,694 sanitation kits in seven cities — Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Jodhpur, Anand, Lattur, and Ujjain, in collaboration with the police and civil administration. They aim to reach one lakh, underprivileged women, with sanitary pads in hospitals, slums and containment zones in Mumbai.
According to Pinkvilla, Dr. Ruma Bhargava, Founder of Samarpan said, “Menstrual Hygiene is not a privilege, it’s a basic human right. Only 42% of women in India use sanitary pads, the reasons may be many from an inability to afford, lack of availability, lack of awareness of menstrual hygiene”. Suresh Kataria, co-founder of the NGO said, “In absence of access to sanitary pads, women use old clothes and rugs which leads to increased chances of infection.”
Akshay Kumar, who is backing this cause, stated – “A great cause needs your support. COVID-19 doesn’t stop periods, help provide sanitary pads to underprivileged women across Mumbai. Every donation counts”.
On the work front, Akshay Kumar was last seen in Good Newwz. His upcoming projects include Laxmmi Bomb, Sooryavanshi, Prithviraj and Atrangi Re.
