Aamir Khan’s career as an actor in Bollywood spans almost four decades; beginning as a child artist in Yaadon Ki Baarat. Somewhere down the line, Aamir decided to turn producer and treated the Bollywood audience to a variety of fare from Lagaan to Peepli Live. Let’s take a look at the ‘Perfectionist’ Khan’s evolution as a producer.

Lagaan (2001)

Believe it or not, Aamir Khan was not the first, or even the second, choice for Ashutosh Gowariker’s period drama, Lagaan! Abhishek Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan were considered for the part of Bhuvan, and it was Shah Rukh who recommended Aamir’s name. Even with Aamir on board, Ashutosh wasn’t able to find a producer for the film. This is when Aamir Khan stepped in and started his own production company Aamir Khan Productions to produce Lagaan. And as always, he did it well. Lagaan went on to win an Academy Award Nomination, 7 National Film Awards, 8 Filmfare awards and 10 IIFA Awards. Aamir also met his current wife, Kiran Rao, on the sets of this movie where she was an assistant director.

Taare Zameen Par (2007)

Amol Gupte and his wife Deepa Bhatia approached Aamir Khan to produce and act in a film about a dyslexic child. After he came on board the film, Taare Zameen Par not only made this Khan the poster-boy of education in India, it also marked his debut as a director.

Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na (2008)

Aamir Khan and his father Mansoor Khan produced Aamir’s nephew, Imran Khan’s debut in Bollywood. ‘Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na’ was a mushy college-love story with Imran and Genelia D’souza was a surprise hit especially with the youth.

Peepli Live (2010)

Who would have thought of a satire on farmer suicides and the media overdose? Aamir and wife Kiran Rao produced ‘Peepli Live’, directed by debutant Anusha Rizvi. The tongue-in-cheek look at farmer suicides, politicians, bureaucracy and media frenzy has cemented Aamir ‘s reputation as a producer with an eye for gems.

Aamir’s next productions, Dhobi Ghat and Delhi Belly are also in the pipeline, the former being directed by his wife Kiran Rao and the latter by Abhinay Deo.
