With two Academy and Grammy Awards under his belt, A. R. Rahman could have it no better. But Rahman’s reputation has taken a beating with the Commonwealth Games theme song.

Rahman was given the responsibility of creating an anthem for the Commonwealth Games to be held in Delhi in October 2010. Rahman even promised that his song would be better than Shakira’s ‘Waka Waka’, the official song for FIFA World Cup 2010. Six months and Rs. 5 crore later, the maestro came up with ‘Jiyo Utho Bado Jeeto’ (Live, Rise, Ascend, Win). The CWG organising committee wasn’t pleased with his work. CWG’s executive board member V. K. Malhotra, said that the composition has ‘fallen short of expectations’ and even suggested reworking on it.

The Mozart of Madras may have had us dancing to his tune (literally!) with Slumdog Millionaire and a steady flow of hits, but he seems to have let down his fans at an important stage. It is not clear whether Rahman will be fine-tuning the anthem though.

Looking at the pitiful state of the Commonwealth Games right now, maybe Rahman’s song is just an omen of things to come…
