Colleen Hoover’s novel adaptation Regretting You has turned into one of the biggest surprises of the year, overtaking the domestic gross of one of 2025’s major romance drama hits in a little over two weeks. The film stars Mason Thames, who already had two big releases this year with The Black Phone 2 and How To Train Your Dragon, alongside his real-life partner McKenna Grace as the two leads.
Regretting You Box Office Performance: Slow Start Turns Into Strong Comeback
The film opened with a modest domestic weekend of just over $13.6 million, a start that led many to think it would struggle to recoup its $30 million budget. However, word of mouth and growing audience interest changed everything.
Despite losing a few theaters last weekend, Regretting You now stands at over $70.5 million worldwide. It requires less than $5 million to break even and is projected to surpass $100 million before its theatrical run concludes.
Domestically, the film has earned $38.1 million, while its international total has reached $32.4 million, as per Box Office Mojo. Even after losing 229 theatres, the film earned 156% more on the most recent Friday, bringing in $2.2 million compared to $1.2million on Halloween Friday the week before. Its second weekend brought in $7.8 million, a 42.9% drop from its debut. However, the third weekend saw an impressive $6.6 million, with less than a 15% decline —a rare hold for a romance drama or movie in general.
Regretting You Box Office Summary
North America- $38.1m

Regretting You Surpasses Materialists
Thanks to its strong domestic numbers, Regretting You has now overtaken A24’s romance drama Materialists, which earned $36.5 million in the US, and that film featured a star lineup with Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Evans. While Regretting You still trails behind Materialists globally ($107.8m), its current pace shows it will soon surpass it there, too.
What began as a slow start has turned into a major box office victory for Mason Thames, McKenna Grace, and Colleen Hoover’s growing legacy on the big screen.
