In an era of advanced technology and stylish special effects coupled with animation and 3D, Bollywood is a game for action laden high energy flicks. Many new projects underway with sky rocketing budget are aimed at high end actions and thrills. With the rise of the stunt mania, we take a look at some of the impressive stunts ever performed in Bollywood.

Ek Tha Tiger (2012) :

This Yash Raj Films and Kabir Khan directed venture is the latest addition to our list of great stunts. And the credit goes to Conrad Palmisano’s well devised and rapid action encounters. He majorly elevated the film’s stance with generous use of parkour stunts, well planned chase sequences, numerous complicated jumps and alternative falling scenes. In spite of the extensive use of body doubles, Salman had extensively trained and performed some of his own stunts in the film which are quite a watch.

Don 2 (2011) :

Globally renowned fight and action coordinator Wolfgang Stegemann trained Shah rukh Khan for the action crime thriller. Stegemann created an ideal style for King Khan just in order to make the fight sequences seem realistic and flawless. In the movie, Khan is seen in a perilous 300 Feet high jump. Another car chasing scene shot in Berlin used of about a total 0f 67 cars and lead to the closure of numerous important streets for days. The decisive fight sequence in Malacca Prison, Malaysia shot between Khan and Boman Irani involved real prisoners.

RA.One (2011) :

A confrontation between the evil Ra.One and the goody G.One entails a host of cars being tossed several feet in the air at each other. According to the makers, it was one hell expensive and difficult shot. The movie scores a high as Shahrukh leaps swiftly from one coach to another in a bid to stop a speeding train and acknowledging whistles that follow.

Dabangg (2010) :

The movie’s raw fight sequences combined with advanced special effects ripped the box office apart. Salman Khan’s cop flick earned in total about 215 crores grosses (INR) in 2010 and became one of the top earning bollywood movies of all times. The opening scene of Salman thrashing up the crooks is one entertaining piece. All the fight scenes in the movie are designed by action master S. Vijayan, who previously performed in Wanted.

Bollywood had always had its fair share of actions, combats and thrills. Although, a lesser companion to Hollywood, Bollywood has still to furnish up to a greater rank to match the former’s caliber. The new age collaborations with international Production Houses, have given a ready lift to the face of new age Hindi movies. And the new sponsorship is already replicated in the use of new techniques and international artists, as compared to the raw and coarse techniques of the 70’s and 80’s films with minimal action.

Blue (2009) :

With an eye popping budget of 1oo crore, the film has great underwater stunts showing Akshay Kumar from swimming with sharks to flying over trains. And the man responsible for all the impeccably styled action stunts is Hollywood action director of repute, James Bomalick, who had worked previously in several big budget Hollywood action flicks like Mr and Mrs Smith, Die Hard 4.0, Bad Boys II, The Fast and the Furious and Tokyo Drift. In the words of Bomalick himself, “It’s very difficult to train sharks” and shooting over a hundred feet below the surface needed a lot of meticulously planning and clean persecution. In spite of the movie’s negative reviews the action stunts stood out extravagantly.

Krrish (2006) :

Hrithik ‘s epic leap to rescue was one of the main stunts given out as early as in the trailer left many gawking and many others speechless. Hrithik reprising the superhero’s role as Krrish in a sequel to Koi Mil Gaya (2003) saw an instant hit amongst the Gen Y group as it was the ultimate answer to Hollywood’s Superman. Hrithik rescuing the helpless with his kick ass blows and swift and lithe movements under the famed stunt director Siu-Tung Ching masterly acts left a craving for more and more. The perfectly choreographed chase sequences and skilled fight moves and the presence of the ultimate Greek God Hrithik, won the film several of its action awards of the year.

Dhoom 2 (2006) :

Hrithik Roshan’s climax chase scene is probably one the most remarkable action scenes of the present bollywood. Hrithik a conman is pursued by cop Abhishek Bachan on a helicpoter. The scene went to get a nomination in the Taurus Stunts Awards in the Foreign film category. The film’s action director Alan Amin was on cloud nine and more than happy with the actors. Another shot has Aishwarya Rai Bachan and Hrithik Roshan jumping off a high-end cliff, had been done without any stunt doubles.

Khiladi 420 (2000) :

The scene of Akshay Kumar’s fanatic chase climbing a plane gliding over thousands of feet above the ground and ending in a jump to the hot air balloon beneath had left many a people numb and many others a great reverence of the true Khiladi of Bollywood Mr Akshay Kumar. Considered one of a kind the stunt even today evokes awe in visualizing lone Akshay pinned to the post of the plane revolving round and round high above sans any safety measures.

Ghulam (1998):

Aamir Khan considers this to be the most dangerous scene of his life. A certain shot in the film sees the actor run towards a speeding train. The train barely misses him by 1. 3 seconds. This scene was performed in original by Khan without any stunt double. It went on to win him a Best Stunt Award but Aamir later confessed, it was a needless risk.

This Anil Kapoor and Sridevi starrer was one of the costliest duds of its time. A bold stunt shows Kapoor perched from a chopper in trying to hook himself to a moving train and open the door to steal diamonds. The entire stunt was directed by Veeru Devgan.
