The trailer of Shonali Bose’s widely acclaimed film ‘Margarita With A Straw‘ which stars Kalki Koechlin was released yesterday for Indian audiences. With her phenomenal performance as ‘Laila’ a girl with cerebral palsy, Kalki has received several accolades and awards.
Having spent a long time with the character ‘Laila’, when asked what does she personally takes back from the journey of Laila here is what she said – “Before I started the film I knew nothing about cerebral palsy; except for one film I have seen ‘my left foot forward’ and it opened my eyes. I have had very little exposure to how to be around somebody who is disabled, to know the basics of how do you behave around them, you feel awkward, you don’t know what to ask them and things like that. So this whole process really opened my eyes. And made me realize that we all are humans and we need to understand each other, and the easy way to do that is to ask questions and talk to each other face to face.”
She further adds, “What I love about this film is it doesn’t take disability or sexuality as big issues; it says this is how life is, so what…get on with it, you still get on with life. And Laila’s character has this sort of beautiful sense of life and a way of getting up every time and making a joke out of things. This attitude which you see in the trailer you will see a lot more in the film. It’s Laila’s love for life. So yes I have learnt a lot from the film.”
After impressing audiences across the globe at prestigious film festivals, Margarita With A Straw is expected to release in India on March 13.
