Anees Bazmee is all set to roll out the second installment of his comic drama Welcome, titled Welcome Back this week. While Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Paresh Rawal reprise their roles from the first film, the new addition to the cast is John Abraham, Shruti Haasan and Naseeruddin Shah in key roles. Bazmee struck gold with Welcome (2007) as the film was declared a blockbuster at the box office. It was commendable since the film released along with Aamir Khan’s acclaimed film Taare Zameen Par. So being a solo release this week, will Welcome Back outperform its prequel?
Bollywood’s new found love is franchises and sequels. In the past, we have seen popular films like Hera Pheri get sequels and interestingly they have worked. Phir Hera Pheri released six years after its prequel and yet was a commercial success. Other than the core star cast, there were additions but the Neeraj Vora managed to present an equally good sequel.
Interestingly, Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal series is also another example of sequels outperforming prequels. The first film Golmaal released in 2006 was a semi hit at the box office but the sequels Golmaal Returns and Golmaal 3 managed to become blockbusters at the box office. The sequels went through casting changes and even had varied plots, yet they are considered to be a hit series.
Same was the case for Akshay Kumar’s Housefull series. The sequel became a super-hit making it to the 100 crore club and performed much better than the prequel.
Thus looking at the overall performances of sequels of comedy films, it seems Welcome Back has a good chance as a solo release to make a good box office standing. Anees’ last film Ready too made it to the 100 crore club, so let’s see if the director continues with his streak with this film.
