Being the perfect concoction of the charming and the beasty, Randeep is the most sought after balance between the conventional and the unconventional. From doing stellar classy acts to making a shimmering commercial stint count, Randeep is making the right moves today. With his latest John Day up for release tomorrow, Koimoi.com had an exclusive one on one with the hardcore powerhouse artist!
Normally he likes being called the best artist than being called the biggest star, but today; Randeep too wants to nudge that gap by definitely making attempts at the glittering stars overhead. “That is actually not true. Yes I definitely like to be called a star but deep down inside, I am an artist. And I know one thing that if I do make it large, I would do it better than all my contemporaries. But with respect to that, I can never do films I don’t believe in just for the sake of the moolah. I can’t let go off the artist that inhibits me totally.”
Not only did he do a film titled Risk right in the formative years of his career, but Randeep is known for taking the most amount of risks, the biggest one being completely unabashed about his reported kissing scene with Saqib Saleem from Bombay Talkies. “You know such scenes are not difficult for me because when I know I have such a scene, it’s not about the gender. The person on the other side makes absolutely no difference because once I am aware that I have to enact such a scene, I try and show my affection and attraction towards the character played by the person opposite me. I know people will talk about me doing stuff like that. Call them risks or call them buffoonery, I am totally cool with it”, brushes away the actor in a fit of his cheeky coy laughter.
Doing a film like John Day gives him an all time high, clarifies Randeep as we are intrigued to know why. “Nobody knows but I did John Day between Jism 2 and Murder 3 (Laughs). I had 25 days in hand and so I did the film because I totally loved the script. Naseer bhai had already said yes to the film and it all the more increased my desire to be a part of this film. There are numerous aspects of the character I portray that I myself relate to in real life as well. It was just one of those things that made me feel connected to it.”
John Day that releases this Friday has Randeep playing the vindictive angry young man but certainly the film has its own USP, he confirms. “The film’s main USP is definitely the uniqueness in the theme and essence, its good and its evil (grins) and it has an amazing screenplay. John Day is a brutal thriller drama in the truest sense and I fail to consider that it is not a commercial film. It has all the elements that a commercial film has and more which is a great plotline, great character sketches and a revenge drama.”
