This year, Hollywood big ticket films have made as much as 300 crores till July, with some garnering business over 100 crores. What trade analysts from India have been stating for some time now, has been validated by Irrfan Khan, India’s only genuine import to Hollywood.
Comparing both industries, he said to IANS, “Both the industries have their own uniqueness. But Hollywood has a bigger reach and has its own universal language. It is more powerful. It has dominated our cinema. It can affect the business of Bollywood. But, our films are not affecting their business. Its Hollywood, which is affecting Indian cinema.”
Irrfan has worked in big budget Hollywood films like ‘Jurrassic World’ & ‘The Amazing Spiderman’, and is currently filming for ‘Inferno’. He plays crucial characters in major international films, a rarity for Hindi film actors. He added, “I’m working in both the industries as I’m enjoying my work on both sides. Hollywood demand different kind of skills. They have a different set of audience. So, as an actor it’s fortunate that I get chance to do different kind of work.”
Having won accolades for the runaway hit ‘Piku’, Irrfan’s point of view on bigger reach validates the fact that takers for Hollywood films, in English and in dubbed versions, is growing significantly. It’s a form of competition that Hindi cinema can’t take lightly anymore.
