All the Yash Raj films that have been released recently have a typical flavor to them which makes them less appealing. Similarly, for ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha‘ there seems to be a repetitive touch. In a cliched manner, the trailer starts off with a average looking, middle-class man named Prem played by Ayushmann Khurrana who is scared of English language and cries every time he listens to Kumar Sanu songs. The makers try very hard to create a connect for the common man with the use of the local language from Haridwar.
If last time it was the geeky Suriji in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, this time the challenge is a mismatched marriage since the wife is over-sized. Actress Bhumi Pednekar debuts with this film and unlike any other actress who would have become the glam doll in their maiden films, Bhumi plays the 22 year-old who weighs 85 kilos. She is troubled by rejections and wants to settle down with a young lad in a happy marriage. Well, this time we see a new style of marriage as the lead pair is seen getting married in a ‘Samuh Vivaah’.
Eventually (as expected) there is a competition in the film that brings this couple together. Wait! It’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi all over again and this time with their stress being on ‘Love comes in all sizes’. Just like Vinay Pathak added fun, quirky moments in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodii, this time Sanjay Mishra will handle that with his act as an over-bearing father.
The trailer has its moments of fun but overall the movie seems to be a repeat mode. What’s more irritating in this trailer is the flashes of songs that have been put where Bhumi is seen wearing flowery sarees and bright dresses and it almost made me question the motives of the film maker, rather portraying a plus size woman in a sophisticated manner, it seems he has settled to caricature it.
Dum Laga Ke Haisha has nothing new to offer but with its quirky elements, the film may make up for an interesting watch!
