Recently, there have been a string of con films in Bollywood and none of them have been able to create the right impression. An addition to the list, Dolly Ki Doli does nothing different. Sonam Kapoor is a con bride, who marries guys and later dupes them. On her radar are Pulkit Samrat, Rajkumar Rao and Varun Sharma.
The trailer starts with Rajkumar waking up on his ‘suhaag raat‘ bed calling out for his wife Dolly who has vanished with all their money. As Sonam hooks in her grooms one after another, there is Pulkit Samrat playing the cop who takes on this case of the ‘Looteri Dulhan‘. The trailer has its funny bits and with Varun Sharma (our very own ‘Choocha’ from Fukrey) in the film, you are guaranteed a laugh or two. While the makers try to add a quirky quotient through dialogues like ‘Main Sirf Apne Pati Ko Nahi, Main Sab Ko Doodh Deti Hoon’ unfortunately Sonam’s dialogue delivery falls flat and fails to create the right impact.
The problem with Indian con films seems to be that they concentrate more on the physicality and multiple looks rather than building the characters and a strong plot. Previously, Ranveer Singh too pulled off a con role in Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl where he cons girls but the film did not perform very well. Also recently, Parineeti Chopra did a minor con act in Daawat-E-Ishq but with a backdrop of Dowry. I think the whole con concept was rightly captured by Rohan Sippy in Bluff Master and ever since none of the directors have come close. Dolly Ki Doli is not very impressive and its honestly tiring to see Sonam once again do something she always does! The only con this film tries to pull off is that of selling us with a stale story but wait they fail at this too!
