Not many Bollywood filmmakers are known to be experimental when it comes to exploring different genres. The out-of-the-box quality is rare in Bollywood and Sriram Raghavan is one such director who always makes sure to bring something new on celluloid. Noir is one of the most difficult genres in fillmmaking and with its gore and dark nature, making it palatable for the Indian audience is an even more grave task. Raghavan has directed four films so far and his latest Badlapur is all set to hit the theaters soon. With Badlapur, Sriram once again handles neo-noir genre and with an impressive trailer starring Varun Dhawan, the film has created a good hype.
Raghvan has not exactly been lucky when it comes to his films creating wonders at the box office. Considering that they are not typical commercial potboilers and also since they are not meant for a family audience, his films are niche. Sriram Raghavan’s last film was Agent Vinod, a spy thriller starring Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in lead roles. The film received average responses from the critics but with a collection of 546 million worldwide, the film was declared a flop at the domestic box office.
His first two films Ek Hasina Thi (2004) and Johnny Gaddar (2007) both received a lot of critical appreciation but were not money spinners at the box office. Both films were meant for a niche audience and were low on mass appeal.
Looking at his record, the director’s next Badlapur is also expected to win critical acclaim but this time, the film may even have a good run at the box office considering that Varun Dhawan has a good appeal and his films have so far performed decently at the box office. It seems Badlapur may become Raghavan’s best at the box office.
