Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone

Bollywood’s newest Heroine no.1, Deepika Padukone, who has mesmerized both critics and her fans by raking in almost 500 crore business in a particular year, a feat unachieved by any of her previous contemporaries and so to say, not even by a heavyweight Khan or a Kapoor, this leggy lass has managed this monumental height with immense panache and grind. With Race 2, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express being runaway hits and blockbusters respectively, Deepika has surely upped her Commercial Quotient by notches higher than what it was during her Cocktail days.

Clearly a brand of her own, Deepika has not just managed commercial successes but has also successfully provided us with some enriched stellar performances be it her somewhat conniving act in Race 2, or her nerdy act from YJHD or the no-bokwaas Tamilian Meena Lochini from Chennai Express. Stealing away the thunder from an actor of the caliber of a Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika along with her South Indian twang took us through an otherwise lot-pot roller coaster laughathon. No wonder that her dream sequence along with her famous Chhalo has become such a catch phrase today!

But as they call it the concoction of diverse variations and cultures in the country, Deepika has traversed the path to now metamorphose into a typical Marathi mulgi in her next, with Shah Rukh Khan again. Happy New Year, which brings back the super-triumphant trio of victors – Farah Khan, SRK and Deepika back, has Dips playing the lead protagonist as a Mumbai bar dancer, who leads a team of atrocious dancers, to victory. Based at the backdrop of the time period when the ban on bar dancers were imposed, Deepika’s character takes SRK, Abhishek, Vivaan Shah and Sonu Sood through the entailment of love, drama, failures and most importantly conquest!

After a family holiday in Europe, Deepika, the thorough professional that she is known to be, has joined the rest of the Happy New Year cast to finish the shooting leg of the Farah Khan flick. Long in the making, HNY is currently being filmed in the picturesque exquisite Dubai locales. At present, according to reports, Farah Khan and Company is all set to jig on their ‘Indiawaale’ number which is touted to be the next victory anthem for the nation. At a war of the moves and the grooves, Deepika will lead the team of five, taking them to a triumphant run in a dance competition that features all other international teams as well. So a song like Indiawaale would bring in the right amount of Indianness and represent the country in its truest avatar. Donning an entirely refreshing look for the film, Deepika is all set to finish her two-week Dubai schedule before moving on to the next shooting sequence in Goa.

While many names were being talked about playing the lead, Farah ultimately zeroed in on Deepika, given her searing intensity with which she pulled off a certainly difficult Meenamma and the brand value that she now invokes. Previously, Deepika had also played a Marathi blind girl in Pradeep Sarkar’s Lafangey Parindey, a film that also revolved around a dance competition. Now after all the overwhelming responses to her Tamilian tongue-in-the-cheek act, all eyes would be on our feisty Meena Lochini taking on a purely Marathi character yet another time! We wish the actress luck as she takes the giant leap of transformation. Chhalo (wink!), get going gal!
