The fascination between man and his machine is eternal and has been there for a long time. And our Bollywood industry too has an obsession with cars. From featuring a luxurious car in a movie, using it as a central character to giving it a life of its own, Bollywood directors have underlined the connection between the hero and his beloved car through various films.
If there’s one element that makes a movie more captivating and out of the ordinary, it’s an involvement of a four wheeler as a fundamental character. The latest addition to the category is Ashima Chibber’s Mere Dad Ki Maruti, which released this Friday. The movie stars Saqib Saleem, playing a teenager who sneaks his father’s red Maruti to impress his girlfriend. The comedy film also features Ram Kapoor and Rhea Chakraborty in the lead roles.

Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi
The movie is a 1958 comedy starring brothers, Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar and Anoop Kumar along with Madhubala and a Ford Model A playing pivotal roles in the film. The car has been used by the protagonists throughout their entire jaunt in the film. Not only is the car featured in the first scene of the movie, but it makes its way all through the credits, the poster, the title and the title song.
This 1991 Amitabh Bachchan film, featured a customized yellow Volkswagen Beetle, named Ram Pyaari. The car was seen as an animated fictional character which is Amitabh’s only friend in the movie. The hero also dedicates a famous song, titled Chal Chal Re Chal Meri Ram Pyari to the fictional character.
Taarzan: The Wonder Car
The movie was director duo, Abbas-Mustan’s attempt to make a film based on a car inspired by 1983 hollywood horror, Christine. The film was about a young boy whose life changes after he comes across his father’s old car kept in a junk and converts it into a contemporary machine and names it Taarzan. The movie features Vatsal Seth, Ayesha Takia and Ajay Devgn, who plays the spirit trapped inside the car.
Do Dooni Chaar
Directed by Habib Faisal, Do Dooni Chaar is a story that revolves around the life of a middle class family and their desire to own a car. How they cope up with their financial condition and a set monthly budget to buy a four wheeler, forms the rest of the movie. The film starred real life Jodi Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh in the lead roles.
Ferrari Ki Sawaari
Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s sports comedy featured the much talked about Ferrari, which ones belonged to the cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar. Helmed by Rajesh Mapuskar and starring Boman Irani and Sharman Joshi, the Ferrari Ki Sawaari movie is about a father who whips a Ferrari to fulfill his son’s dream of becoming a cricketer.
