If we thought the underwhelming performance of Besharam at the box office was the end of its shamefully disastrous performance, worse has happened now. The terrible performance at the box office has resulted in the film’s satellite deal being cancelled.
Jayantilal Gada, head honcho of Pen India, the agency which procures satellite rights for Zee’s entertainment channels said that they are not taking delivery as per the contract on which they made the purchase before the film’s release. They are using the exit clause to return the film to Reliance Entertainment (the producers). Interestingly, they had a negative clause too in the contract according to which the buying price will be reduced if the film did not earn a ballpark figure. The reason for the exit is the film’s box-office performance which is well below expectations.
Infact, this is not the first time that they have dropped a film. Barfi! was dropped too when it did not release on schedule. But, after the release, they bought it again for a different price.
According to Gada, they make satellite purchase based on the perception and presentation made to them by the makers or the studio. Once Besharam is up for resale, they will be open to buying it again.
The spokesperson of Reliance entertainment was hopeful that since they share a long standing work relation with Zee, this can be worked out between them.
But the concern of the channel isn’t wrong as there actually might be fewer takers for the film on television premiere. Besharam which had seen a pompous release is now being labelled as one of the biggest duds of the year. Quite a blemish on the name of both Abhinav Kashyap and Ranbir Kapoor.
