Dishy, effervescent and suave; yet flamboyance is one thing that he shoos away from – Arjun Rampal has completed more than a decade in this industry and has been a testament to the catapulting rise as well as the shallow showdowns throughout. While he was busy making a mark in the industry felt with desperate and failed attempts, critics had written him off until a Rock On happened. And ever since then, Arjun has shot back into the game doing some immensely acclaimed roles, one that isn’t quite expected out of this leggy model.
Prakash Jha’s muse, who is busy penning one character after the other for this actor, Arjun feels blessed to be in the space he is in. “When no one ever saw the actor in me, Prakash ji was the only director who felt I was versatile. He looks at me in a way much more different than what others do. Whenever he calls me, he tells me he has got a fine film ready for me. It is just that I can never turn Prakash Jha down. It is because of him, I feel, people attach a little more credibility to my acting. If there was no Raajneeti or a Chakravyuh, the actor in me would have never got the due recognition,” smiled the actor.
But Arjun who plays a young politician in Jha’s upcoming Satyagraha also essayed Prithvi in Raajneeti. Will the characters be identical or have similar tones? And up comes the reply. “Prakash Jha is a maverick. Although both Raajneeti and Satyagraha are his films, I know my characters would be totally different. Arjun of Satyagraha is more of the grass root level politician but Prithvi in Raajneeti hailed from a powerful political legion of sorts. Arjun is the physical strength behind the power of Satyagraha whereas in Raajneeti it was all about the conniving mind games that you played. This is more of righteousness whereas Raajneeti was about politics. But the unwanted similarity in the characters was also my concern in the very beginning which later was swept away because of Prakashji’s valuable character sense.”
History has it that when it is a Prakash Jha film, it is almost a stellar ensemble cast involved. A film featuring heavyweight names like Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal, Manoj Bajpai, it must have been intense on the sets. “We spent almost two months shooting for the film in Bhopal and it was like a family gathering out there. I have worked with all of them before and it has always been fantastic for me working with the cast in Satyagraha. It was a really intense film but then again, I would say the hard work has paid off very well as we have all performed to our best,” points out Arjun as he sings off with his disarming smile.
