Koimoi Reader Rami Mohamed has written to us an interesting column by listing 3 Big Bollywood movies of 2015, that may be a Riskiest Box Office bets. Read here:
Bollywood would like for all their films to succeed both financially and critically, but the harsh reality is few films make it while most of films sink with out a trace. Some films are such risky prospects that we often wonder why the producers chose to invest so much money in them. Like for example Ajay Devgn’s Action Jackson and Arjun Kapoor’s Tevar.
Some of them may exceed the expectation like PK, which was the riskiest movie of 2014 and it turned out to be the highest grossing film ever domestically in Bollywood.
Bollywood releases more than 300 films per year and it was a quite a difficult task to run down the list of over 300 movies releasing this year but I picked three movie that I thought are the Riskiest Box Office Bets of 2015.
1. Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet:
It is neo-noir drama film directed and co-produced by Anurag Kashyap, based on historian Gyan Prakash’s book Mumbai Fables. Set in Bombay of the 1960s. Anurag is still looking his first big commercial film and Bombay Velvet is his first commercial film with budget around 90+ crore.
The film has seen so many delays and it has been in the news for all wrong reasons. Rumors suggest that one of the reasons for the delay was that certain portions needed to be re-shot. Many trade claim that the film has overshot the original budget by quite a margin. And that this has forced the makers to drop plans of filming parts of the movie again.
Bombay Velvet and Anurag can be a good movie content wise, but making a neo-noir drama film set in Bombay of the 1960s is always a risky step since the potential audience immediately gets limited.
2. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani:
It is a historical romance film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The film tells the story of the Maratha Peshwa Baji Rao I and his second wife Mastani. Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra star in leading roles.
Bajiro Mastan has been a dream project of Sanjay Leela Bhanali and he was planing to make it for the last 13 years. His dream pair were Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Sanjay Leela has always been known as a risk-taker and this time, he has taken a huge risk by making a big budget film with Ranveer Singh who I believe is the riskiest decision so far. Will the audience accept this film? Well, only time will tell.
3. Sooraj Barjatya’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo:
It is family drama film, directed by Sooraj Barjatya starring Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor in lead roles.
Sooraj and Salman Khan have shared a great chemistry and they delivered what I call the best family drama movies we have ever witnessed. And hence the expectations are high this time. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo will be typically Sooraj’s movies so we expect an entertaining one. Remember always “the key to success is the same as it’s always been – a great content” so if the content of PRDP turns out to be as good as Sooraj’s previous movies, then sky is the limit.
On the other hand, there is a strong rumor saying that the team of the film will tour the world, performing at venues, to promote their film and absolutely that will help the film in the overseas market. However, the only two problems, which I feel, that might work against the film are :
1. The name of the movie. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (English: Received a Treasure of Love) is kind of old-fashioned and it initially did not impress the audience.
2. The second problem of the film will be whether the youth will accept a typical “Sooraj Barjatya” kind of content movie.
Prem Ratan Dhan Payo is a gamble for the director too. If the film doesn’t work, it will be a serious setback for him but there are lesser chances that the film might not work or will not gross 200 crore because ultimately it’s Salman Khan film and he is one of the biggest superstar today, which is probably the biggest reason that most people might see the film.
Those are my list which I think they are the riskiest movies this year. Do you agree with me? Or you have your own list?
