April 2nd, 2011, the day when 1.2 Billion Indians celebrated India’s Cricket World Cup win after 28 years. Today marks the 9th Anniversary of the historic win which made even the Bollywood celebrities go berserk in celebration. The 2011 victory is to the current generation, what the 1983 win at Lord’s was to the previous one. And if 1983 announced India to the Cricket world, the 2011 WC victory cemented India’s position as the cricket powerhouse.
It is a triumph that will be remembered for ages and the image of skipper MS Dhoni smashing Sri Lanka’s Nuwan Kulasekara for a six to seal the victory is etched in the heart of every Indian. Gautam Gambhir’s under pressure 97 will always be remembered as the most crucial innings on the night of the final. And Yuvraj Singh established himself as a legend and he will always be known as the World Cup hero as he was named Man of the Tournament in 2011 World Cup.
Those days Bollywood stars went on a virtual holiday with the Cricket World Cup postponing many big releases – have taken time off to enjoy the games and tweet about them. As the Indian team were playing the final, many stars were either at the match or tweeted heavily about it. Aamir Khan, Preity Zinta, Kunal Kapoor, Ameesha Patel and Lara Dutta were present at the Wankhede Stadium, cheering for our heroes.
After the victory, Amitabh Bachchan, with son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya, did their own victory lap, driving out of their Juhu bungalow ‘Jalsa’. “Incredible! It is like we just won our independence. It is madness outside!! Abhishek, Aishwarya and me on top of the roof of a car, waving tricolor and just screaming,” the veteran wrote on Twitter. “Chak De India,” said a beaming Shah Rukh Khan to the media outside his Bandra residence after the team picked up the trophy.
