“Unfortunately, everybody calls him ‘bhai’! But his fan following is so huge that any girl would love to marry him. He is loved by one and all,” the 36-year-old said here Wednesday at the launch of a video album named “Hogi Salman Ki Shaadi”.

Shreyas further praised the superstar’s philanthropic nature.

“He has done a lot for a lot of people and it’s not only the screen persona, but off-screen also. He is such a person, who is very kind to everyone, helps everyone and wants good for everyone,” Shreyas said.

“Obviously people will think good for him. And I think any girl in India would give her right hand to get married to Salman,” he added.

Needless to say the movie has proved to be nothing less than a box office disaster. It was indeed never expected to be a super hit, however the collection are way less than expected. This is indeed one of the biggest flops Priyadarshan has ever delivered.

Makers and distributors will both encounter heavy losses thanks to the dismal performance of Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal. The film’s lifetime collection, in no way will be more than 10 Crores.

The movie did somewhat well in Maharashtra, thanks to the Nana Patekar effect. If we look at the mass belts of North India, the movie has done pretty poorly and will now need a magic to recover. Belonging to a franchise that had been a surprise package after it released worldwide, Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal, starts with a backdrop of a rustic and rural Indian village, haunted by a ‘shrap’ after the golden cross from the village Church was stolen. The village has everything that the creative mind of Priyadarshan could bring in. A kamina promoter, a family that is the main focus of the story, an opinionated ‘Ghanta Prasad’ father, protective brothers and a darpok fattu protagonist who gets beaten even by the gali ke bachches! (How silly!) That’s not just it. The torture starts its ride as the plot keeps jumping from here and then. The darpok Johnny (Shreyas Talpade) who is lovingly called ‘Bakri’ by village mates is an eye sore to all and is the main centre of attraction! Ahem, that traction of getting beaten up every second frame of the movie. His father, David (Om Puri) married Maria who in turn had ditched Peter (Paresh Rawal) and is the bone of contention between the two 60 year old veterans in this overtly boring flick. Maria (Madurima), this time its not Johnny’ s mother but his lady love tries to elope with the spineless Johnny but fails each time, courtesy Johnny’s fuddupaana! Each time Maria and Johnny are seen together, news traverses with an approximated speed that is even more than a shatter of a lightning and his over-protective brothers cum goons are ever ready to beat the poor dumb Shreyas up.

Enter Bodyguard Nana Patekar who has his own history and soon becomes Johnny’s Bodyguard and pretends to be their family’s lost son Sam. This tentatively touted mad comic saga is nothing but a mind wrecked comedy that will not tickle your funny bones, even for once and trust me, every other time you wake up from your snooze, you find Shreyas getting bashed up in different corners of the village. Post Patekar’s ingression into the film brings a slice of aggression and the same mara-mari continues but it helps the scared-of-ghosts Johnny to become a mard suddenly! (Sick!)

What follows is a series of who-dun-it to engrave the mystery behind the Church-cross and an extremely stretched second half that loses plot and is in a direction of its own!

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal Review: Script Analysis

This mad comic caper lacks the most essential ingredient of a film: the Script. The story writer Benny P. Nayarambalam must have been going through acute constipation when he wrote the plot for this film, which in turn is a no brainer mindless comic caper that promises a lot but fizzles out at the end. None of the character mouths dialogues, worth remembrance. Dialogues like ‘jo nahate nahate pishaap kare use kaise pakroge’ takes a toll on the intellect, gets on your nerves and you are left with an acute need of a Saridon. The plot is not half baked, or over baked, the plot seems to have not been baked and it fails to be as engaging as the franchise’s predecessor. Adding to its woes, is a sudden abrupt ending and a climax that could not pack in the required punch! Not even with the gibberish PJs thrown in here and there!

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal Review: Star Performances

A firecracker that showed immense spark with Iqbal has waned out and become a fiasco today. Shreyas Talpade, who failed to gain accolades with his previous comic outings, be it Housefull 2 or the painful Joker, doesn’t surprise us at all. His inability to portray his character well is a testament to the fact that he is just another vanquished soldier in the B-town army. Expectations from Nana, who supposedly was in for a comeback, was sky rocketing but Nana falters there and how! The strain in his acting is clearly visible, and he somehow lacks the charisma and machismo that he was an icon of. Debutante Madhurima as Maria is a complete waste and she would curse herself for signing this stupid trash of a film as her foray into the tinsel town. As the manipulative Peter, Paresh rawal is a revelation. He seems to be the only good thing in this completely nonsensical two hour long yawn-athon. But then again, his screen space is very limited and that affects the film too damn adversely. The supporting cast doesn’t have much to do either and does not deserve a mention.

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects

Priyadarshan, who is known to be the Father of Comedy when it comes to Hindi films has seriously lost his magic touch and his efforts are clearly visible on screen. He does his best to make the most out of such a poor scripted slapstick comedy. Music is not noteworthy as none of the songs are really delicious enough to be recalled, after you get out of the cinema halls. Rather, you might just forget the tune few seconds after it plays on screen! The editing needed to be a lot more proper. A little brevity, cutting on some unnecessary scenes could have saved it for the team. R. Ganesh’s cinematography is moderately good as he captivates the rustic flavour of India with some burnished hues.

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal Review: The Last Word

Trying too hard to be a rip tickling comedy, yet another magical piece from Priyam sir’s hands, Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal ends up as a no brainer mindless satirical flick. Give this film a miss since you would just end up feeling that the Popcorn tub and the Cola bottle were the best things about the outing!

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal is a Priyadarshan film that promises comedy, love and a bit of action too. The music composed by Sajid-Wajid has an Indian feel which makes it stand out from most of the other albums in the offering. Also, it does well in going with the film’s plot.

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal Music Review – Dariya Ho

The album begins with the track ’Dariya Ho’, a duet by Shadaab Faridi and Monali Thakur. A romantic and a gentle melody with some ‘desi’ beats, it is a pleasant outing for the listeners. There is a 90s charisma to it with an impressive use of flute. Lyrics by Jalees Sherwani are impressive, rhyming and very well support the composition’s flow. The ‘remix’ which follows is of relatively shorter duration and not as gratifying and enjoyable as the original.

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal Music Review- Desi Mem

Next to arrive is an item number ‘Desi Mem’ which has Mamta Sharma bringing her vocals behind the mike. The hook line in the chorus is really catchy while Wajid does well in penning the entire track that captures the essence of the situation well. The ‘remix version’ though quite similar to the original (albeit with higher beats) is interesting too.

‘Zor Naache’ is a duet which has Keerti Sagathia and Suganda Mishra coming together. This song is a true ‘desi’ number which rightly portrays an all around atmosphere of joy, rejoice and happiness. Sajid-Wajid have used ‘dhol’, ‘nagaare’ and ‘manjeera’ well in their composition aptly depict full-on-masti mood in the community. Wajid’s lyrics are captivating too.

‘Ishq Ki Dafli’ is another ‘desi’ rendition which resembles ‘Zor Naache’. It is good to see Babul Supriyo making a comeback of sorts while gaining good company of Sugandha Mishra and Bela Shinde. Though one still feels that the composition could have benefited with added spunk, Jalees Sherwani’s lyrics are good enough to leave an impact on the listener.

The album moves forward with ‘Ringa Ringa’ which carries the same mood as the songs arriving before it. Singer Ujjaini is energetic throughout the course of the track and does well in uplifting the mood of the album further. Moreover, Jalees Sherwani’s lyrics are simple and straight forward. The ‘remix version’ fits in well too.

Last to arrive is ’Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal Theme’ which has vocals of Uvie and Wajid. A short track which does well in supporting the (comic) theme of the film, its beats continue from where ‘Ringa Ringa’ left.

Sajid-Wajid come up with a decent album here and though the overall impact isn’t on the same lines as their recent work in films like ‘Rowdy Rathore’, ‘Housefull 2’ and ‘Teri Meri Kahaani’, their compositions should do well in aiding the film’s narrative.

With an opening of merely 20% (which didn’t really show much improvement over the weekend either), ‘Joker‘ continued to be poor all through. After the weekend collections in the range of 15-16 crores, the film doesn’t carry many hopes in the rest of the week either. Despite the fact that it managed a solo release for itself and ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ wasn’t a huge competition any more, ‘Joker’ has proved to be a downer at the box office. Though it is obvious that the film would suffer losses, the only silver lining is that the losses won’t be of disastrous proportions since the film hasn’t been sold at a very fancy price.

Meanwhile Akshay Kumar has moved on and is already eyeing ‘OMG – Oh My God‘ as his next money-spinner. Sonakshi Sinha has seen a break in her century run but has ‘Son of Sardaar‘ and ‘Dabangg 2‘ lined up to bring her back in the reckoning rather soon. On the other hand Shirish Kunder could well be taking a short break before announcing his next.

Other releases of the week, ‘I M 24‘, ‘From Sydney With Love‘ and ‘Jalpari‘, didn’t find any favour whatsoever from the audience. Poor release, negligible show count, abrupt arrival and hardly any mention from those within and outside the industry further proved to be a death knell for these small budget affairs. Each of these is a major commercial failure.

The movie it seems will have to rely on it’s Saturday and Sunday box office collections to leave any mark at it’s 1st weekend box office. Let’s see if Joker floats or sinks like Tees Maar Khan.

As bland as the title of the film may sound, Joker does not disappoint.

In a bit of an out-of-world way, the small village of Pagalpur is overlooked when India’s map is being charted during independence. After the inmates of the mental asylum in the village break loose, all the other inhabitants flee the place.

Surrounded by his crackling machines, Agastya (Akshay Kumar) is a scientist in the US searching for signs of life beyond the earth. When he has nothing more than static to show his research sponsors, Agastya has a month to hope that ET or his brethren show him proof of their existence. When he finds out that his father is seriously ill, he abandons his work and goes back to Paglapur with this girlfriend Diva (Sonakshi Sinha).

The current inhabitants of Paglapur make one hell of a fruit basket. There’s Agastya’s brother (Shreyas Talpade) who speaks only in a strange tongue, his cross-eyed father (Darshan Jariwala), a loud friend (Vindu Dara Singh), a teacher (Asrani) who thinks that WW2 is still on and many others. Agastya finds out that his father was faking illness but decides to stay back and help the villagers out of their misery. Since Paglapur is not on the map of India, they don’t belong to any state, have no electricity, roads or water supply. Since the tiny crackpot village has nothing to offer, even the ministers Agastya approaches for help pass the buck to the next state.

At last Agastya comes up with a plan: to create crop circles in Paglapur and sell it to the media and the world as alien doing. Soon his plan brings reporters and scientists in hordes to the village and things are starting to look up with lots of song and dance. But Agastya’s competitor Simon Goeback (get it?) (Alexx ONell) puts a spanner in the works when he arrives in Paglapur and calls the whole thing a hoax.

This other-worldly mess plays out in the rest of the movie.

Joker Review: Script Analysis

Shirish Kunder’s premise for Joker is too simplistic. Obviously, logic takes a backseat but it’s the predictability that is the real downer. The dialogues are alright. Some of the puns like Simon Goeback, the tongue-in-cheek timing of the Ayega song etc. are well written. The reason behind the title of the film Joker is well thought of.

Why Agastya decides to stay back is not convincingly done. While scientists from all over the world ascertain the crop circles have an alien hand, how does Simon blow their lid in less than 5 seconds? Why do the armed forces stand at the perimeter of the forest where the aliens appear instead of hiding inside the forest? And why the heck did they open fire on them? Looks like Jadoo took all the logic away in his spaceship.

Joker Review: Star Performances

Akshay Kumar does a good job but nothing extraordinary as Agastya. Sonakshi Sinha mostly clings on to Akki’s arm as his girlfriend Diva. Shreyas Talpade is very good as the brother and manages to convey all his emotions with just a handful of gibberish words that he has to mouth throughout the movie. Vindu Dara Singh’s act is annoying. Thankfully Minissha Lamba gets very little time for hamming as a press reporter. Darshan Jariwala and Asrani are good as Agastya’s father and nut job of a teacher respectively.

Joker Review: Direction, Editing & Music

There’s not much that director Shirish Kunder could do to the script, but he does a good job. His editing is alright. Gaurav Dagaonkar and G. V. Prakash Kumar’s songs are enjoyable. Shirish’s background score goes well with the scenes. Sudeep Chatterjee and Anay Goswami’s cinematography is very nice. The colours keep the movie quite cheerful. Visual effects are well done.

Joker Review: The Last Word

Joker is an amusing but predictable fare. Nothing out-of-this-world.

This also means that unlike a ‘masala‘ blockbuster a la ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘, ‘Rowdy Rathore‘, ‘Housefull 2‘, ‘Bol Bachchan‘, ‘Agneepath‘, ‘Ra. One‘ or ‘Don 2‘, each of the films in last one years which promised a solid start from the very first show and fetched 100 crores or more at the box office, ‘Joker’ is a film that is expected to grow as the day progresses and register some good collections over the rest of the weekend, if the word of mouth is really positive.

Though currently there are a million stories floating around the pre-release promotion of the film, eventually it should all boil down to the content. What works in the favour of this Akshay Kumar-Sonakshi Sinha starrer is that one can expect the unexpected in the final results. Also, one has to keep in mind the fact that both the actors are coming after two blockbusters each and there is a large fan-base/regular audience which does check out a film regardless of what is published or written about in various forums or social media.

While the opening few shows are expected in the range of 50%-60%, there is enough potential to grow for two major reasons. First and foremost there is no significant competition this week. Secondly, the run of ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ is almost coming to an end which means ‘Joker‘ can consolidate it’s position, especially if kids catch fancy of this sci-fi flick.
