Traditional folk music, or ‘Lok Geeti’ have, over the years, been an integral part of Bollywood music, but the frequency, off late, is debatable. During the 60s and 70s, there were  innumerable folk songs used in the films, which had relevance to the story line and characters. But gradually with the evolution of contemporary cinema, the scope and usage of traditional music got limited. Yet if the story demands, and there is an apt setting, the folk derived songs, have a bounty of mass appeal and are without much ado incorporated in the movies.

Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Shankar-Jaikishan, S.D Burman, O.P Nayyar were, to name a few musical maestros, who tapped the genre and brought it into limelight. Sequentially, ‘Lok-geeti’ got hogged by situational based-character driven-modernized lyrics. And now with the “ultra-modern” lyrics and usage of slangs and puns in songs, the Folk connect, has a diminishing bondage with the films.

One of the rudimentary glitches, with the usage of rustic folk music in mainstream cinema, is the problem with the dialects. They are in languages not everyone knows or understands. Hence improvisation and translation to languages which are mass-accepted and have mass appeal, becomes elementary. Yet overcoming such debacles, are  the well-gifted lyricists who put the old folk-wine in new bottles, and pen down, modern yet folksy-in-essence songs that are revamped effectively.

Reviving the culture are Music Directors like A.R Rahaman, Shankar-Ehsan-Loy, Ismail Darbar, Piyush Mishra, Sneha Khanwalkar , Ram Sampath, and many more, who revisit the superabundant arena, and bring for the audiences, deep-rooted, folk music from different nook and crannies, all across the globe.

Tracks like “Genda Phool” (Delhi 6), “Dhol Baaje” (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam), “Chaiyya Chaiyya” (Dil Se), “Bhumro” (Mission Kashmir), “Raana Ji” (Gulaal), brought back the folk songs into mainstream Bollywood music. And now “Balam Pichkari” (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani), “Ambarsariya” ( Fukrey), “Bijli Aaye Ya nah Aaye” (The Reluctant Fundamentalist) and songs from Gangs of Wasseypur, are topping charts and making waves amongst music lovers.

The quiddity of ‘Lok-Geet’ is retained and the traditional touches to the songs surmount to the entertainment factor in Bollywood films. With shows like Coke Studio and other continuous attempts to invigorate the old rustic folk music, one thing that can be surely assured is that the tradition is here to stay, always. This in turn, is rekindling the bondage Folk Songs have with the Filmy Music. One cannot simply take the folk roots away from the Indian Cinema especially Bollywood.

The multi-starrer Race 2 made the maximum opening weekend collection of 51.30 crores and then went on to join the 100 crore club.

Sajid Khan’s over inflated disaster Himmatwala, while still under the influence of its futile hype managed to rake up a whooping 31 crores in its opening weekend. Though a negative word of the mouth slaughtered the film’s business later and could barely manage any more earning, it still can boast of the second best box office opening weekend collection of 2013.

Akshay Kumar starrer Special 26 had an opening weekend earning of 25.75 crore which places the film at the third most profitable box office beginning.

Vishal Bharadwaj’s poignant commentary on SEZ impressed critics and failed the audiences. Collecting an income of 22.40 crore in its opening weekend, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola rested as the fourth biggest opening weekend at the domestic box office in 2013.

Upping its class by manifolds, Vishesh Films’ Aashiqui 2 has earned a opening weekend amount of 20 crore. The film, which had measly expectations despite being a sequel to the 90s’ money spinner, is already an unexpected hit. Vishesh’s last release Murder 3 despite carrying more known faces of Randeep Hooda and Aditi Rao Hydari did not start up as miraculously as Aashiqui 2.

As has been the trend with him, Jimmy Sheirgill has managed to impress one and all with his 2013 releases as well. First Special 26 and then Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns have been a testimony to that. In fact many have dubbed his presence and act as the best part of the Tigmanshu Dhulia film when as ‘Saheb’, he did wonders in a performance oriented role.

In fact it is his knack of coming up with one good performance after another, film after film which is ensuring that his stocks continue to be on a rise, what with many more interesting films all set to be green-lighted.

“Yeah, I am enjoying it all. Films like Saheb Biwi aur Gangster Returns and Special 26 are poles apart. I equally loved playing a Sub-Inspector in Special 26, albeit a fake one at that,” smiles Jimmy, “I am also looking forward to Bullet Raja where I come with Tigmanshu again. The film is about friendship and has me and Saif Ali Khan in very interesting parts.”

Meanwhile he continues to be an ace star in Punjabi films and his next production Rangeelay is much awaited as well, especially up North.

“Rangeeley  is an out and out masala film. This would be yet another Punjabi film of mine where Navaniat Singh would be calling the shots. The film would be a lot of fun”, he adds

As per reports, Jimmy is also carrying plans to begin a couple of more Punjabi productions this year where he is expected to act in at least one.

Post its opening weekend collections, Chashme Baddoor had already trounced Zila Ghaziabad from Koimoi 2013 Top 10 Bollywood Movie Listings. With above 19 crores in its kitty in 3 days, the movie surpassed the lifetime collections of Zila Ghaziabad, which is 16 crores at the domestic box office.

And now with 22.35 crores collections, this David Dhawan comic caper stands at No. 9 position defeating Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns, which made a lifetime business of about 19 Crores at the Box Office. SBAGR now stands at No. 10 position in the list.

In a year which has seen decent successes week after week, starting with Table No. 21, one more film to add to the list is Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns. Of course it didn’t turn out to be earth shattering but then there was never an expectation of such a result. A medium budget film which was primarily targeted at an audience that had warmed up to Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, the sequel managed to hang on reasonably week over the weekdays and ended up netting 18.25 crores, hence entering the safe zone.

Of course given the release date and the fact that it has good names associated with it, the film could have done even better. In fact going by the kind of cult following that the Tigmanshu Dhulia directed original had enjoyed during last couple of years, a larger distance could have been covered. However average content of the film pulled the film down to some extent due to which the word of mouth was decent to good, not excellent. Also, the film found itself restricted to the niche audience.

Still, one cannot deny the fact that on a relative scale, this Irrfan Khan-Jimmy Shergill-Mahie Gill-Soha Ali Khan starrer has done much better than first in the series. With expectations of around 25 crores as a lifetime total for the film, it would be more than three times the business of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. This also means that third in the series is pretty much on the cards.

On the other hand Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga struggled to complete even its first full run of one week. The film opened to a disastrous response, stayed like that during the weekend and was in a hopeless scenario during the weekdays. With negligible collections not even accounting for 50 lakhs, the film is now out of theatres.

The movie added about 1.90 crores in its kitty yesterday, taking its 4 Days Domestic total to 14.65 crores at the Box Office. SBAGR scored very well in Delhi/UP Circuit, however, made a poor business in Maharashtra, Gujarat and Nizam.

This Tigmanshu Dhulia directorial is likely to end up its Opening Week business in the range of 17-17.50 crores, which is certainly great for a film made on a limited budget.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns has released and expectedly, the film has been appreciated for performances by each of the lead protagonists. While Jimmy Shergill and Mahie Gill had pretty much demonstrated their prowess in the first part of the film, inclusion of Irrfan Khan has added further weight to the affair.

Irrfan, looks like your buddy Tigmanshu Dhulia continues to spin some tales which are different from routine when it comes to you. As a prince without a kingdom, you seem to be an unlikely gangster around.
(Laughs) I think he doesn’t want to write straight parts for me. He is always in mood to throw some or the other challenge to me. He has a certain way of looking at characters which are complex in their traits. He has done the same in Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns as well. For my part of ‘Raja Bhaiyya’ too he wanted me to take that route and hence made the character much more layered.

This time around it seems to be a really complex tale of lies and deception between you and Mahie.
Definitely. Mahie has one of the best roles written for a woman in Indian films. In fact I would say that for her, this is a role of a lifetime. We enjoyed some great interaction in the film, both in front and off the camera. Just like Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, the sequel too is abound with some good dialoguebaazi that keeps the spice on in the proceedings.

There is some spice in your life as well, what with ‘Life of Pie’ fetching multiple Oscars. Guess international awards are doing much more to your stature as an actor than Indian awards.
It’s not about Indian and American, it is about intention of the body which is giving you an award. This body could be constituted out of India, Bangladesh or Sri Lanka for that matter; it is fine. Acknowledgment from those who are genuinely recognising your talent is always a good sign and is most welcome.

Meanwhile there is a strong buzz in the air that you could well be picking up something interesting in West all over again, especially now that ‘Life of Pie’ has further consolidated your position in the global map.
I haven’t signed any new film on the dotted line though. Once I do that, I would be able to divulge more. There are few scripts that I am reading. Also, there are some interesting books which are supposed to be made into films.

While a book adaptation would be a good idea, how about appearing in a sequel of your own film? Is there anything in your wish-list?
I would love to do a sequel of Life…In A Metro. I would like to take forward the character that I played in Thank You. (Smiles) I would definitely not mind playing Paan Singh Tomar again.

As a result, the film ended up netting around 12.75 crore in the opening weekend. In the process the film has almost doubled the lifetime business of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and is now in the process of comfortably crossing the 20 crore mark in the first week. It would be interesting to see the kind of distance that it would cover from this point on since there is good competition ahead from Jolly LLB, 3G and Mere Dad Ki Maruti, each of which is not just carrying good visibility but also threatens to take away a lot of screen space at multiplexes.

While the eventual outcome of Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is still a while away, the fact remains that the film will make profits. Also, its acceptance has shown once again that as a filmmaker, Tigmanshu Dhulia has managed to create a good name and standing for itself. Amongst actors, Jimmy Shergill has shown once again that when given a meaty role, he has it in him to deliver each time around. As for Irrfan Khan, he has shown his versatility by jumping seamlessly from Life of Pie to an affair like this. On the other hand Mahie Gill should find further meaty roles coming her way.

Second, and the only other release of the week, Saare Jahan Se Mehenga, was always expected to struggle at the release stage itself and that showed when it could hardly get 2-3 shows a day at leading multiplexes. With negligible opening footfalls, below average content, poor reviews and zero interest amongst the audience, there was no chance whatsoever for Saare Jahan Se Mehenga to make its presence felt. As a result, the film sunk, and how, with no chance whatsoever for revival of any kind. Disaster.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Movie Still

The fact that there is no major competitor for Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns this week is sure to add to the box office collection of the Bollywood flick. Based on  the struggle for power in UP, it was evident that the best business for the movie will come from pockets in Delhi/UP and East Punjab. The movie also did some decent numbers in CI and Rajasthan. Single Screens are sure to add value to the film’s box office fate.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is expected to see a spike in numbers on Saturday & Sunday and a 1st weekend collection of about 12 Crores seems likely.

Watch or Not?: If you have watched the 2011 movie Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster there is absolutely no reason you want to miss the sequel. If you haven’t, note this “Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns brings to you the raw truth of a hunger for power, love and lust; watch with gaping eyes as pride, politics and love takes one to a different zenith.”

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns kicks off from the same note where its prequel was put off. Saheb (Jimmy Shergill) and his shadow Kanhaiya (Deepraj Rana) survive the murderous attempt on their life by Babloo (Randeep Hooda). As put in Saheb’s words, “Hum jee rahe hain. Makbara nahi huye hain abhi tak.” Though Saheb is left crippled by the attack, he is determined to get back on his feet at the earliest.

And guess who’s in charge of the affairs at his highness’ palace. The Biwi (Mahie Gill) noting her husband’s state takes matters in her own hands and is now an MLA from their constituency. However, things haven’t changed much between Saheb and Biwi as Mahie continues to show considerably large indulgence in alcohol and of course the much needed “love”. And here she goes again “Yeh mard hi kyun milte humein. Shayar kyun nahi milte.”

Enter Gangster Indrajeet Singh aka Raja Bhaiyya (Irrfan Khan) to avenge his family of two generations back.  Why would he want to do that? Well perhaps coz he feels “Humari toh gaali par bhi taali padti hai. Aur humein aaj bhi Raja Bhaiyya bulaya jata hai” Add to this the fact that Saheb wants to marry his beloved Ranjana (Soha Ali Khan).

From this point onwards the only aim of almost every character in the movie is to put an end to Saheb’s reputation. Mind it just the reputation. Killing him would be too easy a death or so it seems. Be it the Royals, who once used to be on Saheb’s side or the corrupt politician who is more of a joke rather than a real threat, all of them has ever wanted, is the end of Saheb’s rule.

On one hand Biwi again falls for a new man (Irrfan Khan), on the other hand she wants him to eliminate her husband’s new love interest Ranjana (Soha Ali Khan) who apparently is also Irrfan’s love interest. Confused?  Yes it’s more than just a triangle. A love square should we term it? I wonder!

Does Saheb get back on his feet? Or is he eliminated before he could do so? Does Biwi get her love this time?  Is the Gangster’s revenge taken? Watch the movie to find out all!

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Review: Script Analysis

Tigmanshu Dhulia sure knows his audiences. The script has twists unrolling at a pace which will certainly keep the audience’s interests alive till the movie ends. Different from movies where one can simply predict scenes, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns will surprise you more than just once. The dialogues are indeed a treat to the ears. It is witty yet simple in its own way. For one “Aap chaahte ho na yeh jung ho. Hogi! Ghamaasaan Hogi! Aapki Kasam!” will make you swoon over Irrfan Khan. The Script does have its share of flaws as well. Enter 2^nd half and characters seem to be engrossed deeper in complexities. There are a couple of scenes in which you cannot really put 2 and 2 together. All said and done, the script is quite good with the potential to engage audiences.

Jimmy Shergill is perfect as the Royal Blood striving hard to get back on his feet and take charge of the situation. Well, you will not just find a Royal Blood but his performance has the perfect blend of an egoistic yet practical man. Mahie Gill again steals away the limelight with her performance as the Biwi. The portrayal of an ignored wife looking out for love and a resolve to go to any extend for it just couldn’t have been better. Irrfan Khan just seems flawless. Be it his one liners or his portrayal as the love struck Gangster, he completely lives up to the need of the role. Soha Ali Khan’s role, though not as strong as that of the other actors, perhaps needed better efforts than what we saw.

Tigmanshu Dhulia has done it in the past and doesn’t disappoint. Though it’s practically a war brewing inside this Bollywood Flick, Tigmanshu ensures that the movie remains elegant and classy in its own way. His characters, style of narration, and the pace of the story will keep your eyes glued on the screens the whole time.

Talking of Music, we have Jugni from the 1^st film which blends in the movie yet again. Be it the theme song of the movie or the item number Media Se by Mughda Godse, the music goes well with the story.

In addition to all this, the Film’s Editor has done a fine job and the result is a perfect pace to keep you glued.

Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, Saheb Biwi… is the sequel to 2011 film Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster, which was appreciated for its intense script, narration and performances.

The part two takes the story forward from where it was left in the original, which revolved around three characters entangled in a relationship that culminates in tragedy killing Randeep Hooda’s character, confining Jimmy Shergill’s to a wheelchair and letting Mahie Gill’s character become bindaas and powerful.

The sequel stars actors Jimmy and Mahie, who will all be seen reprising their roles from the previous film. They will be joined by Irrfan and Soha Ali Khan in the cast.

Said to be made on a budget of Rs.7 crore, Saheb Biwi… is co-produced by Dhulia and Rahul Mittra.

Dhulia candidly admits that his offering has the right amount of sensuality, which he feels is important to the story.

“There is sensuality, but in little measure. I feel that it is effective only like that. It (film) should have the right amount of sex and passion,” he said.

Actress Mugdha Godse will be seen in an item number for the first time in Dhulia’s directorial venture.

Releasing with Saheb Biwi… is Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga, which is Anshul Sharma’s directorial debut.

Described as satire laced with humour, it targets inflation through a middle-class family living in a small city in north India.

The family, crushed under the burden of ‘mehngai’, tries to deal with it through an ingenious idea, not aware of the problems they would get entangled with as a result of the idea.

The family’s battle with the issues culminates into a climax that brings tears to your eyes.

The film’s First Look made an impression as well and one expected a terrific promotional round to make the film piping hot around its release date. However, and surprisingly, this hasn’t happened though as the film hasn’t seen the kind of massive push that would have made it a must watch affair on the very day of its release. Of course (almost) the cult status that the first part has attained during last couple of years has ensured that there is good recall value for the film. Moreover there is curiosity to watch the film amongst youth as well as older generation. Still, one doesn’t see a bumper opening in the offering.

This translates into the fact that the film should open to a 30%-40% mark and then show gradual escalation towards the evening and night shows. A lot would depend on the word of mouth to be positive which should enable the film to show continuous growth over the weekend. Since there is no major competition in sight, it has an entire week to make moolah. All that is required is the content to be good enough.

 On the other hand Saare Jahaan Se Mehnga sees character artists coming together, hence resulting in an ensemble cast affair. The film boasts of a topical theme (rising prices) and to give good credit to the makers, it has seen reasonably good promotion coming it’s way as well. However, one can’t expect audiences assembling around theatres in hordes to have a dekko at what the film has to offer. With Sanjay Mishra as a central protagonist, one can just expect that at best, the film sees a good all-India release for itself. As for the opening, it would be a pleasant surprise for all involved if occupancy goes beyond 20%.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster released in 2011. Just like the earlier film, this one too has been directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and sees Jimmy Shergill and Mahie Gill reprising their roles with additions to the star cast in the form of Irrfan Khan and Soha Ali Khan. After having had as many as seven music composers for the first outing, Dhulia has preferred to stick with just Sandeep Chowta this time. Mado-K, Juggi Singh, Kausar Munir and Sandeep Nath contribute with lyrics.The music in this film too is reminiscent of the classic era and it does take time for the listener to appreciate it.

Jugni – Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Music Review

The album has a total of five tracks with the popular Jugni from the first outing repeated even this time around which actually opens the album. This track sounds more edgy and funky while retaining the Punjabi flavor of the original song. The vocals have been provided by Punjabi Bhangra singer cum songwriter Jazzy B and does a pretty decent job in his rendition. Lovers of the other Jugni might like this version too. Overall, a decent start to the album.

Idhar Gire – Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Music Review

This is followed by the Jazz styled Idhar Gire sung by Sowmya Raoh who was heard recently in the Dreamum Wakeuppum song from Aiyyaa. Sowmya does a very good job behind the mike and her voice sounds very sensuous. The song itself reminds the listener of the other beautiful jazz number, Kaisi Paheli hai from Parineeta sung by the supremely talented Sunidhi Chauhan but Sandeep Chowta manages to leave his mark nevertheless and you will surely end up falling for this one.

Media Se – Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Music Review

Next in line is Media Se sung by Paroma P Dasgupta .This fun and naughty number is not very appealing on hearing for the first time. But on repeated hearings, one might start appreciating the amusing lyrics as well as the spirited rendition by Dasgupta. The number, by itself, might be more appealing visually as it might be a situation specific song but on a standalone basis, does not really create much of an impact.

Bas Chal Kapat – Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Music Review

With this film being a saga of selfishness, greed, treachery and deceit, Bas Chal Kapat sounds to be the theme song of the movie and has been song energetically by Piyush Mishra. Right from the opening lines of this number, we get to hear and feel the mood and theme of this film and the musical orchestration by the composer is bang on.

Kona Kona Dil Ka – Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns Music Review

The final number in this album is the old world charm filled Kona Kona Dil Ka. This ghazal styled number has been sung beautifully by Devaki Pandit and also happens to be the only romantic number in this album. Keeping in mood with the film’s setting, this song captures the excited but tentative feelings of the blossoming love of the lead actress in the bygone era. Sandeep Chowta has tried to experiment by adding a bit of Western touch midway and has been successful in seamlessly integrating the same with the end result sounding pleasant on the ears.

Overall, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns has a couple of good numbers with Kona Kona and Idhar Gire being the pick of the lot. Music director Sandeep Chowta has showcased his versatility by dabbling in multiple genres and achieving a considerable amount of success to his credit. This being a plot driven film primarily, music is not necessarily its focal point. The makers have ensured that the songs are situation specific and serve as a tool to carry the story forward rather than prove to be a hindrance to the narrative. But the album by itself might not be something which will have a considerable impact and could end up with a very limited shelf life.

On its release, Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster was one of the many films that was trying to make its space amongst others. At the box office too it was a moderate success. However word of mouth did the trick for the film as the film continued to find its audience even after disappearing from theatres. On satellite as well as home video front, it started gaining cult status and it was but obvious that a sequel was on the cards. With the First Look of the sequel doing the trick, expect the film to create some good hype around itself.

Reports are that John Abraham has come up with his career best performance in this gangster affair and if the film indeed catches fancy of the audience, it has in it to reach the 100 crore mark.

What goes in favour of this all-Deol affair is the fact that director Sangeeth Sivan knows a thing or two about comedies, case in point being Kya Kool Hain Hum and Apna Sapna Money Money. Now one waits to see whether the film is a true blue sequel or basically has each of the characters being just repeated, albeit in a different setting and scenario (as has been the case in Housefull and Golmaal series).
