Salman Khan:

Beginning with Salman Khan, who has so far ascribed himself to 5 films in the 100 crore club. With that record it is hard to dispose off this undisputed king of 100 crore club from the list. Both Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 reached the coveted club in a matter of 6 days. While ETT had a total collection of 198 crores, Dabangg 2 made a lifetime collections of 158.50 crores. It was with Dabangg and then Ready that Salman joined the 100 crore club. While Dabangg took 10 days to reach 100 crores and made a total collection of 145 crores, Ready made a lifetime collections of 120 crores after entering the 100 crore club in 12 days. With Bodyguard, Salman stabilized his position in the 100 crore club with a lifetime collections of 142 crores, that entered the club in 8 days. Salman won’t have a release this year, but the domestic box office is looking forward to his next films which are already much hyped up, with Mental’s theatrical rights having already been sold out at 150 crores!

Similarly Shah Rukh Khan too has had a smooth ride in 100 crore club. Entering the club with Ra.One, the film entered the 100 crore club in 10 days and made a collection of 115 crores. Following up his achievement with Farhan Akhtar’s Don 2, which entered the club in 13 days, the film made an income of 106 crores! However, his best performance in the club came with Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan which entered the club in 11 days and earned a lifetime collection of 120.65 crores. Shah Rukh’s next film Chennai Express directed by Rohit Shetty is scheduled to be released in August this year and is expected to maintain his smooth run at the 100 crore club.

Ranbir Kapoor:

Ranbir Kapoor entered the club with Anurag Basu’s delightful film Barfi!. The film that took 17 days to reach the 100 crore mark went on to earn 120 crores at the domestic box office. He furthered his journey in the club with the recent release Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The film that almost leveled Salman’s record of reaching 100 crores in the least number of days is still earning at the domestic box office and has neared its collections to the 150 crore mark. Having had a smooth sail so far, the actor is holding his ground in the club packed with veteran superstars.

While the above actors had an undisrupted journey in the club, there were others whose ride was hampered by a sudden low film which missed the 100 crore mark. Their pace got restricted and with one film losing out the 100 crore benchmark resulted in their diminished status in the club.

Ajay Devgn:

The most prominent one who faced this at the box office is Ajay Devgn. While the Himmatwala fiasco is still fresh in our memories, his previous films that had maintained him strongly in the club also suffered a blow. The actor who had 4 films in the 100 crore club saw a break with Himmatwala! Son of Sardaar took 16 days to reach 100 crore and raked up an income of 105.03 crores at the domestic box office. Golmaal 3 that reached 100 crores in 17 days made 107 crores! Singham that reached 100 crores in 37 days barely scraped through its collections into the club by earning 100 crore, whereas Bol Bachchan which took 45 days to make 100 crores, earned 102 crores of lifetime collections!

Akshay Kumar:

The other actor who suffered the same fate is Akshay Kumar, by the miss of Special 26, OMG and Khiladi 786 reaching the club. Entering the club with Houseful 2 which surpassed 100 crores in 17 days and made 114 crores, Akshay upped his position with Rowdy Rathore that reached the club in 11 days and earned 131 crores. However with the failure of his subsequent films, especially this year’s Special 26 he lost his stronghold on the club.

Aamir Khan:

The master of perfection Aamir Khan is still a record holder at the 100 crore club. Though his Talaash wound up its lifetime collections with 93 crores, he still has a well founded position in the club. His 2009 film 3 Idiots is the only one in the club that has a collection of above 200 crores with an income of 202 crores. Despite Salman’s ETT nearing the 200 crore mark, the film’s lifetime income fell short by 2 crore to reach the 200 crore limit. Besides 3 Idiots, Aamir has Ghajini in the club as well. Reaching 100 crores in 16 days, the film made 114 crores in total. This year as Dhoom 3 is all set to hit the screens, Aamir can expect another of his entrants in the club.

Hrithik Roshan

 Hrithik Roshan has left his 100 crore club fate sketchy. Focussing single mindedly on Krrish 3 since his last film Agneepath that is his only film in the club, he is perhaps eyeing another 100 crore film with the third edition of his Krrish series! Agneepath that reached the club in a matter of 11 days made 123 crores at the box office. Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish 3 that has slated itself for a Diwali release should be able to up his standard in the 100 crore club with a good performance at the domestic box office going by its good technical premise and superhero theme should be able achieve it easily.

 However, the concept of 100 crore does challenge the qualitative values of films by basing their benchmark on numbers more than the strength of their scripts. Yet, the faulty concept is still a raging trend now and the glories of the club are here to stay, for now!

‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ had created a new record for first three days collections of 57 crores. Now ‘Dabangg 2‘ has managed to rake in 63.6 crores. This is still in the top of the league as competition for the third and fourth best are far away. Salman has shown once again that in the current scenario, he is his own competition.

What is notable is the fact that ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ had released on Independence Day and carried a major advantage. Moreover, more than half of these record collections had come on its first day itself. On the other hand ‘Dabangg 2‘ opened at around 21 crore mark and the collections remained around the same lines on Saturday before havoc was created on Sunday. Now it has to be seen that whether ‘Dabangg 2‘ would eventually turn out to be Salman’s highest grosser. ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘ had managed 190 crores for itself but first and foremost ‘Dabangg 2‘ needs to cross 145 crores total of ‘Dabangg’, something which is quite feasible and should be possible within two weeks.

Whether that would turn out to be the case and when are all speculations but one thing is for sure that Salman has yet again managed to find audience for himself and in the process, a fifth straight success in a row after ‘Dabangg‘, ‘Ready‘, ‘Bodyguard‘ and ‘Ek Tha Tiger‘, hence consolidating his position as a Number One superstar in the country.

One has to credit Arbaaz Khan for delivering a successful film amidst major hype and expectations. As is the case with all major films, there are more detractors willing to pull you down and this was no different in case of Arbaaz and his film. However he stuck to his convictions and put together a film which was always going to be akin to walking a thin rope. He has made a huge kick-start as a director and it would be interesting to see how he shapes his career from this point on. As for Sonakshi Sinha, she is riding a wave and now has third 100 crore biggie in the making after ‘Son of Sardaar‘ and ‘Rowdy Rahore‘ this year.

Aamir Khan’s Ghajni (2008), earning a gross of over 115 Crore (INR) became the first movie to crossover the 100 crore mark. And successive films have religiously followed. But the success is quite subjective. Although the Khans, Kumars have pertinent role to play in the box office wins yet the good content part is unavoidable. A good look at the list of the movies made to the club reveals the nuances of the success story.

Ghajni (2008)

Aamir Khan as the revenge seeking hero struggling with amnesia was a huge draw of the year. The box office erupted seeing the vindictive Khan in the South Indian remake. The film with encouraging reviews was commendable for A.R Murugadoss’s direction, Aamir Khan and Asin’s stellar performances, the brutal fight sequences and A. R. Rahman’s soulful renditions. A thorough entertainer,it reached the 100 crore benchmark with great content and Aamir’s captivating presence. The publicity and promotion of the movie was tremendous with the Ghajni haircut going in rage at that point.

3 Idiots (2009)

The second consequent Aamir Khan 3 Idiots movie to strike gold was a Vidhu Vinod Chopra multi starrer comedy. With a lavish star cast of Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Boman Irani the film already had high hopes. To top it, the film was loosely based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller ‘Five Point Someone’. The movie has a record breaking gross of about 202 Crore (INR), the highest ever for any Bollywood film yet. With great reviews and superior acting, directing, editing, music, dialogues, screenplay, story the movie swept most of the awards of the year and is a winner throughout.

Dabangg (2010)

Dabangg earned the highest gross in the opening week with 80.87 Crore (INR) and became one of the top grossing Bollywood films of all times. It won a National Award and garnered mostly positive reviews. The inescapable Salman Khan factor had already hyped the movie’s expectations. The content a wholesome entertainment was laden with rich Salman humor and raw fight scenes. In a way, Salman had single handedly carried the movie in his shoulders, with the gist intact.

Bodygaurd (2011)

Although average on content, this Salman Khan starrer Bodyguard fetched a whooping 140 Crore (INR) approximately and earned the highest earnings in the opening week. With a tedious story line and sagging narrative the only saving grace of the movie was Salman’s larger than life presence. The film had the Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s hit pairing after a long time which did wonders to the film’s fate and so did its soulful tracks.

Singham (2011)

The film trailer received over 22lakh  viewership in You Tube alone. Hardly a film of substance, Akshay’s moustache twirling masaledar act and some kick-ass action ripped the box office apart. The movie’s “Chin ta ta” track was a huge hit. The Telegu remake saw Akshay in a double role avatar. And it is Akshay’s raw and loud act which took the cash registers swinging.

As evident, Akshay’s gravity  swiftly helped the film reach an astounding 113 Crore (INR) approximately.

With an average theme, the great publicity and Khan’s tremendous fan following gave the action flick its due. A very recent example can be Anurag Kshyap’s Gangs of Wasseypur I & Gangs of Wasseypur II  movies. Raw, earthy the movies made for a watch and the crude violence played dangerously.   Hailed by critics, a genuine work, the movies did its fair share of business surviving on content only.  Other content wise successful movies like Band Baaja Baraat, Ishaqzaade, Ishqiya  have had its share of win in the box office without reaching the 100 crore level and without the Khan or Kumar element.

Bollywood is going the number crazy way but to comprise content for money would be a huge discredit. Khans or Kumars sell indeed but only to an extent plausible. And a fine content just boosts up the chances of box office success. So the exclusive club just about manages to settle a heady combination of both the Name and the Idea. And this mishmash of the Fame and Talent is here to stay.

Ready as well as Housefull 2 were both comedies and topped the Rs. 100 crore mark each just in India. She had superstars like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar along with her and that helped a great deal in her films gaining good eyeballs. Now expect the same from Bol Bachchan as well since it has Ajay Devgan in lead with the film’s genre being comedy, something that comes naturally to Asin, says a trade expert.

The film, which releases in July, has turned out to be a different wicket though for Asin since director Rohit Shetty had his own idea about bringing laughter on screen. While Anees Bazmee had a family setting for Ready and Sajid Khan took the slapstick route for Housefull 2, Rohit has made Bol Bachchan far more situational.

“The film’s original, Amol Palekar starrer ‘Golmaal’, was largely situational and didn’t quite rely on gimmicks. Same is the case with ‘Bol Bachchan’ as well. Asin had to mould herself in accordance to Rohit’s requirement since the idea was to be serious and act naturally even though the scene’s situation was much funnier,” informs a crew member of the film.

No wonder, Asin is expecting tremendous box-office outcome with her newest outing. In their last two films, Ajay Devgan and Rohit Shetty had scored a century each (Singham, Golmaal 3). With another centurion joining them, one doesn’t expect anything less than triple the fun from the team.

As many as six action films in the 10 films which have netted more than Rs. 100 crore in India.

There was a time in the seventies and eighties when action films used to be considered relatively safer bets. That’s because action fares used to work very well in the smaller centres, which was where the money came from. Things changed with the multiplex culture setting in. The shares given by multiplexes, which had mostly come up in big and medium-sized cities, became so huge that the business of smaller centres became quite insignificant. Slowly but surely, the tastes of the multiplex-frequenting audiences also changed and because the multiplexes were where the moolah was, filmmakers started making films to cater to the tastes of those audiences. It was felt, action films were not to the liking of the multiplex crowds who seemed to prefer comedies and love stories. But even that has now changed. Action seems to have come back into fashion. Of course, while the public in the ‘B’ and ‘C’ class centres doesn’t mind action films like they used to be made 10-20 years ago, the multiplex public is more discerning and will give an action flick the thumbs up if it has style and finesse. But one thing is for sure – today, even the multiplex audience would go to watch an out-and-out action film if it matches up to its tastes.

Probably, that explains why there are as many as six action films in the 10 films which have netted more than Rs. 100 crore in India. The six action fares in the 100-crore club are Ghajini, Dabangg, Singham, Bodyguard, Don 2 and Agneepath (which crossed the coveted mark on 5 February 2012). The other four films which have surpassed the Rs. 100-crore mark are 3 Idiots, Golmaal 3, Ready and Ra.One.

It was followed by the superstar’s Eid release, Bodyguard. Produced by his sister, Alvira, and brother-in-law, Atul Agnihotri, it turned out to be the biggest hit of the year, setting the couple up for years to come, just as Dabangg brought in fortunes to producer-brother Arbaaz Khan. Bodyguard broke all opening records, netting over Rs. 20 crore on the first day in India! The film released on Wednesday to coincide with the festive occasion of Eid, proving once again that Salman and the festive day make for the deadliest combination. Last year too, he had a bumper film opening on Eid with Dabangg which had smashed all previous records on the day of its release, netting Rs. 14.35 crore on the first day. But Bodyguard surpassed all of that by a wide margin – pulling in a historic Rs. 20.5 crore on the opening day! This is still the highest first-day net collection.

Salman Khan’s Magic At Overseas Box-Office

Bodyguard worked its magic Overseas too. It opened in Dubai on Tuesday because Eid was celebrated a day earlier there, and collected 11 lakh dirhams, which was 4 lakh dirhams more than the previous record-holding film – again a Salman Khan starrer, Dabangg. In the UK, where also Bodyguard saw release on Tuesday, the first day’s record gross was £60,000. On Wednesday, the gross collection jumped to £2,00,000, which is the highest single week-day collection ever!
