Kanan Iyer’s tale of witches – Ek Thi Daayan - which tried to give Bollywood a taste of our folk lore based paranormal stories, did not appeal to the tastes of audiences. With a lifetime earnings of 26 crores, the film is already evicted from the Koimoi Top 10 Movie List of 2013.

Balaji Motion Pictures’ Shootout At Wadala which began with a brilliant occupancy at most money spinning circuits has assembled a great beginning amount of 30.80 crores by the closure of its first weekend. SAW now stands at No. 10 position, replacing Ek Thi Daayan.

Looking at the pace of the film’s business, SAW will easily surpass Jolly LLB (32 Crores), and Chashme Baddoor (40 Crores). The film elevated to good records within a very short span of time and is maintaining stable escalating performance at the box office so far. It’s pick up is astonishingly good and it won’t be a surprise if the film goes on to join the 100 crore club post earning its lifetime collections.

The trick here will be to notice whether the film manages to trump Race 2‘s lifetime collections as well. Race 2 which has maintained its Number 1 position of the year since January has finally managed to face some real tough competition at the box office.

With Aashiqui 2‘s Tuesday figures catapulting the film’s total earnings to a hefty 27.25 crore, the film has now surpassed the lifetime collections of Ek Thi Daayan which calculates to 26 crores. Perhaps technically, Ek Thi Daayan was a better film than Aashiqui 2. But Romance as a genre is always preferable to ghastly horror.

Aashiqui 2, which was made on a short budget of 8 crores has clearly earned more than its rightful due perhaps, earning back all its investment within less than a week of its release. The pace of the film is speedy and it is achieving a good record in a very short span of time. It won’t be surprising if before the wake of this Friday’s quintessential releases, Bombay Talkies and Shootout At Wadala, the film manages to match up to its immediate predecessor Jolly LLB which rests at number 8 on the Koimoi Top 10 Movies List of the year, currently with a total earning of 32 crores.

John Abraham

John Abraham is on a high. His Shootout at Wadala is all set to arrive this weekend and all eyes are on how the actor, who has been around for a decade, manages to carry the film. As he engages himself with the last leg of the film’s promotion, he takes a break for a quick tête-à-tête:

John, the D-Day is all set to arrive and the promise made by Sanjay Gupta and Ekta Kapoor, who were willing to put their money on you two years ago, is all set to be realised. After all, your role has been pitched as once-in-a-lifetime. That must have been flattering, isn’t it?
After working with them, there is a thumb rule that I have realised for the rest of my life and that is to work with people who have faith in you. No more am I am going to engage with people who are just making proposals. Moreover the response to Shootout at Wadala so far has only further strengthened my resolve. Some movies are made and some movies just happen. This one’s the latter.

Guess you still haven’t forgotten the disappointment of your last release I, Me Aur Main, which went down due to lack of marketing and promotion.
(Pauses) I was completely let down on all departments. See, as an actor you have to take a jab on the chin as you are the face; I am okay with that. Still, I am sure that I would never make a situation like that happen again for me. A lot boils down to the studio you work with and if the studio does not have faith in you, it will show.

Well, talking about happier things, there is some camaraderie building between Anil Kapoor and you. After all, the pair of you were earlier seen in Race 2 and are now pitched opposite each other again in ‘Shootout….’.
(Smiles) Oh yeah, I totally love him. He is a good man. During Race 2 we spent a lot of free time in Turkey bonding. That continued in Shootout at Wadala as well. Throughout the making of the film, we knew that a Tsunami was waiting to happen with Sanjay Gupta at the helm of affairs.

There is a mini-tsunami happening though with Sunny Leone and you coming together for Laila. Guess that should keep the audience happy too.
Sunny and I simply love Laila. In fact, I have told her that going forward, a lot of people will call her Laila. Also, I have predicted that she will be performing the song in every function for the next one year at least; Laila has such great potential. Sunny, Tusshar and I really worked hard on the song.

And how is the hard work paying off in your pet project Madras Cafe? When do we see that on the big screen?
We are through with the principal shoot of Madras Cafe. We are gearing up for a 30th August release. Also, the film’s first look will be out in July. I hope that after the release of the film, we can speak out loud that even in India we can make films of international calibre and stature. The hero of the film is none other than my director Shoojit Sircar.

The multi-starrer Race 2 made the maximum opening weekend collection of 51.30 crores and then went on to join the 100 crore club.

Sajid Khan’s over inflated disaster Himmatwala, while still under the influence of its futile hype managed to rake up a whooping 31 crores in its opening weekend. Though a negative word of the mouth slaughtered the film’s business later and could barely manage any more earning, it still can boast of the second best box office opening weekend collection of 2013.

Akshay Kumar starrer Special 26 had an opening weekend earning of 25.75 crore which places the film at the third most profitable box office beginning.

Vishal Bharadwaj’s poignant commentary on SEZ impressed critics and failed the audiences. Collecting an income of 22.40 crore in its opening weekend, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola rested as the fourth biggest opening weekend at the domestic box office in 2013.

Upping its class by manifolds, Vishesh Films’ Aashiqui 2 has earned a opening weekend amount of 20 crore. The film, which had measly expectations despite being a sequel to the 90s’ money spinner, is already an unexpected hit. Vishesh’s last release Murder 3 despite carrying more known faces of Randeep Hooda and Aditi Rao Hydari did not start up as miraculously as Aashiqui 2.

The first quarter of the year coming to an end brought with itself some gloomy expressions on the faces of most producers, distributors and the entire casts as films could marginally round off well, the box office numbers not withstanding! With just one film racing it up to the coveted 100 crore brigade, the first quarter was just another dull show of films at the multiplexes and single screens.

With twenty one releases in the first three months, almost half of it drowned within the shackles of flops, buried deep for its lack of a convincing storyline and half baked performances. Expectations were sky rocketing since January saw the release of the hyped and publicized Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola which despite having some marvelous performances could not live up to the expectations. Films with unconventional themes might have worked wonders last year but this year, there was a completely different story. With largely off beat yet highly commercial films like David, Inkaar falling totally flat on the face and Special 26 just managing to maintain a steady income rate, 2013 has taken a spin around the orbit. Although Special 26, being an Akki film was anticipated to do a lot better than how it fared at the box office.

As always, there were too many films with the likes of Jayantabhai Ki Luv Story, 3G, Zila Ghaziabad, and Rangrezz which tanked at the box office without a trace, much to everyone’s expectations. The sole runner of the race would definitely be Race 2 which, in spite of mixed reviews and gibberish twists and turns managed to reach the 100 crore target, courtesy the hype and the excitement generated by its prequel’s super successful run! And when there were major shocks, there were some brilliant surprises too. With small budget films like ABCD- Any Body Can Dance, Kai Po Che and the satirical Jolly LLB raking in a lot of moolah turned out to be the biggest money spinners of the first quarter. While ABCD was the only super hit film, Kai Po Che tugged at people’s hurts with its beautiful treatment and turned out to be another hit feather in Abhishek Gattu Kapoor’s hat! Jolly LLB, which was produced on a stringent budget with less famous but hugely able names managed to bring in the most jolts, scoring in with a dream run of 32 crores, a number that might look tiny yet is mammoth for the entire Jolly LLB team.

And the biggest showdown Award of the first half definitely goes to the (as you expected it!) Sajid Khan Entertainer, err Brain-buster No brainer Himmatwala, which failed to even match up to the hype enveloping the film. The dynamic first time duo of Sajid and Ajay were defin itely the pick of the season with crowd expected to shower in huge numbers, but this film could do nothing to back the loud mouthed Sajid’s virtual oaths and promises. Audience likes variety, not a typical gibberish and nonsensical remake and that is what has been proved from how Himmatwala upseted its producers and distributors with no profits at all.

Bromance being the flavour of the season, Chashme Baddoor helped David Dhawan register his first hit after ages. Whilst the Fate of the recently released Nautanki Saala and the action stunner Commando: A One Man Army are being decided, we look forward to the next quarter with films like the hugely dynamic and innovative Ek Thi Daayan, Aurangzeb, Bombay Talkies, Shootout At Wadala, Ghanchakkar and other films up for release!! Hopefully, it wouldn’t be much of a showdown anymore (consult Sajid Khan to know the real meaning!)

The previous movie to hold this position was Don 2 with about $680,000 followed closely by Bodyguard with $630,000, and Dabangg 2 with $600,000. An interesting comparison might be with a Pakistani film Bol which had grossed over $1 Million at the Pakistani Box office. Race 2, surprisingly is the 2nd highest grossing  movie in Pakistan after Bol.

As of now, Race 2 has grossed over $6.75 Million at the overseas box office which roughly comes down to 37 Crores plus in Indian Ruppees.

With major releases lined up in 2013 one can only assume that Bollywood is going to take the Box office of neighboring countries like Pakistan by storm. Here’s hoping the relation between Indian and Pakistan Cinema keeps blooming with time.

However, it seems finding a place in Top 10 Highest-Grossing Bollywood Films In Overseas may not be an easy task for this Abbas-Mustan directorial, as it needs to beat the record set by Talaash, which is at No 10 Overseas, with 8.58 million USD.

But Race 2 is declared as Hit in India and Overseas which is a reason to celebrate for Abbas-Mustan and the stars. With Race 2, Saif Ali Khan has his 1^st film in the 100 crore club and John Abraham has his 2nd with Houseful 2 and Race 2.

Made at a budget of Rs.60 crore, the film came out Jan 25 and earned Rs.100.45 crore in two weeks of its release.

“We are glad that Race 2 is continuing its great run at the box office and holding its position throughout,” Gaurav Verma, director – India theatrical distribution, Studios, Disney UTV, said in a statement.

“We had complete faith in the film and are extremely happy that audiences have liked the film and have made it possible for the film to reach this position,” he added.

Co-produced by UTV Motion Pictures and Tips Music Films, the film features an ensemble cast of John Abraham, Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel.

Don and Don 2 (2006 and 2011)

After making path breaking movies like Lakshya and Dil Chahta Hai, Farhan turned to hardcore Bollywood entertainment with Don. The film was a remake of the 1978 film of the same name. The film starred Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra in lead roles. The story of the film had been largely altered especially the climax and the message which very evidently left open space for a sequel to follow. The film was well received. The sequel released in December, 2011 starring the same actors in lead roles along with Kunal Kapoor and Lara Dutta too. The films had an interlinked plot which followed from the main weave of story, but Don 2 was declared a better film in terms of revenue it raked and quality as well.

Dabangg and Dabangg 2 (2010 and 2013)

This movie is one of Bollywood’s most memorable blockbuster hits and won the National Award for the Most Popular film. The film was an absolutely delightful entertainer and went on garner over 200 crores of revenue worldwide. Directed by Abhinav Kashyap and produced by Arbaaz Khan, the film starred Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha in the main roles. Soon after the huge success of the film, Arbaaz Khan issued a statement announcing Dabangg 2. Abhinav Kashyap declined to direct a sequel and hence it was directed by Arbaaz Khan himself. The main characters of the story remained the same with a different setting for the film’s plot. The film’s success can be attributed to the fact that Dabangg was already an excessively hit film. Qualitatively Dabangg was an obviously better film and Dabangg 2 simply cashed on it.

Race and Race 2 (2008 and 2013)

The prequel was straight out sibling rivalry genre of films made into a suspense thriller. An added comic flavor was simply the entertainment bit of the film. Starring Saif Ali Khan, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif and Akshaye Khanna, the film went on to be quite a hit. Race 2 follows the story of the same plot but with newer actors and charcters. Race 2 had John Abraham playing a major role along with Jacqueline Fernandez and Ameesha Patel. The film is still running in theatres.

Jism and Jism 2 (2003 and 2012)

Jism was rated as one of the sexiest films. Essentially an erotic suspense thriller, Jism starred John Abraham and Bipasha Basu in the main roles. In his hottest avatar ever, John hasn’t been forgotten for his great debut performance in this film. In 2012, the sequel Jism 2 released starring Randeep Hooda, Arunoday Singh and introducing Sunny Leone in Bollywood. The film was directed by Pooja Bhatt. However it was easily forgotten venture and a huge disappointment for both critics as well as audiences.

Murder and Murder 2 (2004 and 2011)

Directed by Anurag Basu, one would remember Murder because of the lustful kisses and the sex siren presence of Mallika Sherawat. Despite a weak plot and a faltering storyline, Murder managed to become a hit at the box office, mainly because of the aggressive controversies surrounding the film. Murder 2 which released in 2011 was more of a semi sequel to Murder. The film was a psych thriller and an excessively dark film which was a let down. Murder 3 is lined up for release soon. The film will star Randeep Hooda and Aditi Rao Hydari in main roles.

Dhoom and Dhoom 2 (2004 and 2006)

Dhoom gave India a taste of good action thriller. Cops-chasing-smart-goon is central plot of the film which was elaborated stylishly. Dhoom has hot villains and a hotter storyline! While John Abraham swooned brilliantly in Dhoom, Dhoom:2 was at par in fact almost better because of Hrithik Roshan’s brilliant performance and breathtaking stunts. Dhoom:3 is all set to release this year and is much awaited as Aamir Khan plays villain in the film which was shot extensively in Chicago.

Koi… Mil Gaya and Krrish (2003 and 2006)

The prequel was an endearing science fiction film starring Hrithik Roshan, Priety Zinta and an adorable alien called Jaadu. The film was a huge hit and received excellent reviews from critics. Krrish, the sequel gave India its very own superhero. The film despite being a huge hit was a flop show for critics who thought the film was lacking on story front. Commendably, the film had great action sequences and a brilliant performance by Hrithik Roshan. Krrish 3, the next part of this series is slotted to release this year.

Prequel-Sequel movies are a mixed bag. Though the same plot follows into the film, every film is an individual entity which must provide something entertaining and grasping for the audiences in order to be successful. Creativity is a dying art and still in case of films and mostly sequels it must better be put to some good use.

Race 2 is currently standing at position number 12 in this list and beats Son Of Sardaar, Ghajini, Barfi!, Golmaal 3, Housefull 2, Singham and Bol Bachchan, which took more number of days to reach the club.

The film is now a biggie for Abbas-Mustan after the debacle of Players. John Abraham and Deepika Padukone have further consolidated their position at the box office, Jacqueline continues to be a part of hit films while Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel have benefited from being associated with a commercial success as well.

On the other hand Kamal Haasan too has now seen his biggest box office earner since Chachi 420. Though it was a much more universal film and continues to find good eyeballs on satellite re-runs, Vishwaroop is a bigger grosser (at least on an absolute scale) with approx 11 crores coming in. This is marginally better than Rajinikanth’s Robot that had earned 11 crores after its first week. The film stayed on to do decent business over the weekdays though it would now face challenge from a slew of biggies arriving one after another.

David, after taking a poor opening and not really being helped by the word of mouth, saw a decline over the weekdays with hardly any collections coming in. The film netted 3.5 crores after its first week and would end it’s lifetime run around the 4 crore mark. It is a major flop at the box office.

However even bigger disasters are Midnight’s Children, Deewana Main Deewana, Listen… Amaya and Mai… which couldn’t even see the combined collections of 1 crore!

Beaming with the latest success of Race 2, Saif Ali Khan gave a candid interview during a fun meet and greet session exclusively with Metro Shoes for Race 2.

When asked about his female co-stars, he said he doesn’t miss working with Kareena Kapoor and their chemistry on screen has unfortunately never worked.

He talks about his character in Race 2 and how there is a lot of sizzling chemistry on-screen between Deepika Padukone and him in the movie. He also said he misses working with the beautiful Bipasha Basu as she was an integral part of Race 1.

On being asked about accidents happening on sets of the movie he comments that he is very accident prone and the movie being an action thriller, during the shoot small injuries kept happening to him. He compliments Akshay Kumar to be lucky enough to do amazing stunts so well and still not get wounded.

Saif signs off with a smirk on his face about how his name is synonymous with Race. He proudly acclaimed that he is the face and soul of Race and it’s a movie close to his heart.

The Abbas-Mustan directorial added more 2.25 Crores in its kitty on its 2nd Tuesday i.e. yesterday and now stands at a domestic total of about 95.25 Crores at the Box Office.

Let’s first talk about David, a film that at least released as per plan but didn’t have much going for it as far as marketing and promotion is concerned. Add to that an overall content that didn’t catch fancy of many means the film turned out to be a big downer commercially. Yes, critically a select few did have good things to say and no one bashed it in particular. That was fair as well since the film’s content did have sparks to catch one’s attention. However that was diluted by the fact that the opening was much lesser than a bare minimum 30% odd that one expected. That reflected in around 2.5 Crores that came in which is poor.

In comparison Vishwaroop still managed a decent opening of around 30%-40%, which was on predicted lines, and saw some decent escalation over the weekend as well. A well made film, though not as spectacular as the hype created around it, the Kamal Haasan starrer benefited from the controversy as well since it’s collections were better than Robot in the Hindi belt. That’s saying a lot since Rajnikanth is a much more popular name up North when compared to Haasan. Though 8 Crore weekend is still not a very huge number, it is still face saving enough. All eyes are on how it sustains for rest of the week.

Other releases of the week, Midnight’s Children, Deewana Main Deewana, Listen… Amaya and Mai… have proven to be disasters at the box office. Not even finding a proper release for themselves, they were not reviewed by most and were criminally ignored. Though a select few reviewers who saw Listen… Amaya and Mai… appreciated them for the content, zero visibility factor pulled these flicks down in a major way.

All of this benefited Race 2 which, in its second weekend, boasted of collections that were one and a half times more (15 Crores) than the sum total of all new releases (10 crores) combined together. With over 90 crores already in its kitty, the film is now comfortably headed towards the 100 crores mark, courtesy underperformance of the newer releases.

With over 83.95 Crores at the domestic box office and 22 Crores plus in overseas Race 2 now stands at a Worldwide box office total of 106 Crores.

Yes the movie has crossed the 100 Crore mark worldwide and is now aiming to do the same at the domestic box office. With none of the new releases able to affect the box office journey of Race 2 the movie is sure to complete 100 Crores at the domestic box office in a little over 15 days.

Saif Ali Khan is sure to make a debut in the 100 Crore Club with Race 2.

Race 2 made a business of about 3.25 Crores on its 2^nd Friday i.e. yesterday at the Domestic Box Office. Its first week exacts were 75.50 Crores. Race 2 now stands at a domestic total of about 78.75 Crores.

Though the 2^nd Friday collections were 50% of what weekdays had accumulated, Race 2 still managed to survive in this Box Office race. With the huge number of releases lined up week after week in the times to come one just wonders if they will all meet the fate of this weeks new releases.
