What’s Good: A captivating issue of medical negligence is  indeed a thrilling idea.

What’s Bad: Everything else saving Tisca Chopra’s acting and the film’s premise.

Watch or Not?: Basing the movie on the real life story of Ankur Arora, the film is an unworthy tribute to an unsung child hero who was slain by medical discrepancy. Following from the popular American sitcom Grey’s Anatomy in its idea and execution, the film with its drooping second half, shallow approach and mostly overtly melodramatic screenplay packed with unnecessary dialogues make it a terrible drag. I would recommend you to watch Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate episode on Healing Medical Profession, if the issue is that close to your heart. Don’t waste your time on this unnecessary feat!

An arrogant, success in his head kind of veteran doctor makes a petty mistake at a simple appendicitis surgery of an eight year old kid. His intern Romesh who was always in awe of him, now finds himself compelled to bring out the truth about the man he worshiped. Taking on a medical giant, against all odds it is the win of justice for Ankur Arora.

Ankur Arora Murder Case Review: Script Analysis

The script itself is a well grounded and well researched one. The idea is emotional and thrilling. The entire idea of making a film on a issue like this comes with a magnanimous responsibility of portraying the facts right and depicting the stances correctly! The film doesn’t tamper with any facts surely, but the presentation is done without any earnestness. Adding too many dialogues has killed the film’s blaze. The script that is a slice of someone’s life is undoubtedly unparalleled which loses to poor execution.

Tisca Chopra gives a potent performance with grounded intensity. Instinctively she brings on screen the pain of a broken mother’s heart. For her alone, the film is a treat.

Kay Kay Menon is impressive but his repetitive acting mores have clearly become stale.

Paoli Dam can simply not act and doesn’t know how to emote. She doesn’t do justice to the strong character she is meant to enact!

Arjun Mathur is promising but shines only because of his author backed role!

Suhail Tatari blunders while bringing the tear jerking plot on celluloid. It is the over-soaring melodrama along with over the top, naïve dialogues which don’t help the audience try to delve deep into the film’s feeling quotient. If medical dramas have intrigued you in the past, this film is definite- must no – for you. You’ll become averse to the genre altogether. The screenplay is done in a cluttered manner and the editing could surely have been done withh some more neat work.

Ankur Arora Murder Case is not an atrocious film, but is gravely disappointing. Wasting actors like Tisca Chopra and Kay Kay Menon along with making a spiced up version of true life incident of a death of a child due to medical negligence, the film is a sure damp squib for me. This lengthy movie drags on for too long in the second half and kills whatever high the first part had raked up. With a sketchy screenplay and unsure climax doing the film irreparable damage, I can’t settle for anything above 1.5/5 for the film. Grab a season of Grey’s Anatomy and rescue yourself in case you chance upon this anywhere. You’ll destroy the sanity of your taste for this genre if you watch this film.

A film that despite negative reviews and critical panning was able to be considered a hit, much due to its erotic sexual content has been rehashed to be made into a sequel of sorts, but with a complete new outlook. Vikram Bhatt, who has been happy the way his original film worked with the audience, does have regrets too. Too much of hard-core sexual content limited Hate Story to a particular section of the society while others were deprived of watching the film, much due to the intoxicating adult content.

But Hate Story 2 returns with too many changes. Paoli Dam, the gutsy actress who made a stunning bare bodied debut into the industry with the film this year seems to be replaced by television starlet Surveen Chawla who has been signed in as the lead for the second edition. Sushant Singh would be seen to be playing the villainous character taking it over from Gulshan Devaiah who essayed the antagonist’s role in the first part of the franchise. Not just the faces, the film also changes hands as Vivek Agnihotri, the original maker of the film would be busy with his upcoming film, ‘Freedom’ and hence Hate Story 2 has fallen into the laps of Vishal Pandya, who will head the direction now.

While Hate Story was high on nudity, lewd dialogues and propelling vengeance, Hate Story 2 will discover the inner demons of a woman’s body which is even more dangerously spiteful. Bhatt who feels that Sex dominated the first package of their film and hence overpowered the brevity of their plot, has decided to go low on eroticism cutting down on adult content and focus on the ‘Hatred and Revenge’ that stand out as the main themes of Hate Story 2.

With Paoli taking a backseat and Surveen taking up the reins of the franchise now, it would be exciting to see how this bubbly Punjabi girl fares as the dominating, revengeful woman lead in Hate Story 2!

What’s Good: The explicit scenes; the drama in the second half; Gulshan Devaiah’s performance.

What’s Bad: The predictable screenplay; the absence of any high points in the drama; a few unintentionally funny scenes; the slow pace of the narrative.

Verdict: Hate Story is an average fare at best.

Loo break: A couple, especially in the climax.

Watch or Not?: Watch it if you want to see a revenge drama that goes half way.

BVG Films’ Hate Story is a revenge drama. Kavvya Krishna (Paoli Dam) is a journalist who exposes a corruption scandal which implicates Siddharth Dhanrajgir (Gulshan Devaiah), an industrialist. To get back at Kavvya, Siddharth offers her a cushy job. Kavvya accepts the job and ends up sleeping with him. Siddharth then fires her. When Kavvya learns that she is pregnant with Siddharth’s child, she threatens him. Siddharth gets her kidnapped and makes sure that she can never conceive again.

Kavvya, who has now been ostracised by everybody but her photographer-friend, Vicky (Nikhil Dwivedi), decides to take revenge on Siddharth. She trains to become the most famous prostitute of Delhi. She gets into bed with anybody who can help her destroy Siddharth’s company and his life. Vicky, who secretly loves Kavvya, lets her stay in his house but hates her for becoming a prostitute.

Kavvya finds out secrets about Siddharth’s company by sleeping with his company’s CEO (Joy Sengupta). She then makes sure that Siddharth bids and wins a deal that will entail financial losses for his company, much to Siddharth’s father, Kumar Dhanrajgir’s (Saurabh Dubey) chagrin. Kumar asks Siddharth to clean up the mess or to lose control of the company.

What happens next? Is Kavvya able to exact her revenge on Siddharth? Or does the cunning Siddharth win the battle of wits? What about Vicky? The rest of the drama answers these questions.

Hate Story Review: Script Analysis

Vikram Bhatt’s story is ordinary and predictable. However, Bhatt’s screenplay works in parts because of the mind games between the two opponents, Kavvya and Siddharth. The screenplay also creates ample scope for explicit scenes (many of which have remained uncensored, in spite of a few obvious cuts). The second half is much more arresting than the first half, which has several scenes that are unintentionally funny.

Also, the pace of the drama slackens at intervals, leaving the audience bored. Several obvious questions pop up in the viewer’s mind: why does Kavvya, who is shown to be a competent journalist, get into bed with her nemesis so easily just after she has exposed him? Why does she turn to the world’s oldest profession when she could have easily used her investigating skills to find out secrets about Siddharth’s company and thus, seek her revenge? These and several others points have been conveniently ignored, maybe, just to bring in the element of sex. However, this makes the drama less believable.

Dialogues, penned by Rohit Malhotra, should have been much more impactful.

Hate Story Review: Star Performances

Paoli Dam is good in some scenes and not so good in others. Gulshan Devaiah gives a confident performance as Siddharth. His change of personality when he is in front of his father is impressive. Nikhil Dwivedi gives a restrained performance in a short role. Mohan Kapoor is fine as the corrupt minister. Joy Sengupta does alright as the CEO. Iravati Harshe is alright as the CEO’s wife. Saurabh Dubey leaves a mark as Kumar Dhanrajgir. Bhairavi Goswami has little to do. Others offer average support.

Hate Story Review: Direction & Music

Vivek Agnihotri’s direction leaves a lot to be desired as his narrative works only in the second half. Besides, he is not able to make the drama convincing enough. The film also, unfortunately, lacks any highlight scenes, apart from the explicit ones, which will appeal to a section of the audience. Harshit Saxena’s music and Kumaar’s lyrics are alright. Background music, by Amar Mohile, is very good. Attar Singh Saini’s cinematography is eye-catching. Editing, by Satyajeet Gazmer, is sharp. Action, by Abbas Ali Moghul, is functional.

Hate Story Review: The Last Word

On the whole, Hate Story is a half-baked revenge drama which works in parts. While the explicit scenes and the second half are its plus points, they are just not enough to create positive word of mouth publicity.

Hate Story: Box-Office Expectations

The music of Hate Story has not really caught on but the promos of the film have worked with the target audience. As such, the film cannot expect to take a very good opening at the box-office. Rest will depend on word of mouth publicity that the film manages to garner, which means that the film will have to have an impressive script.

Hate Story: First Look
