Filmmaker Boney Kapoor clarifies that he is planning a sequel to 1987 hit Mr. India and not a remake and added that he would introduce a new villain in the film.

Boney Kapoor

Filmmaker Boney Kapoor clarifies that he is planning a sequel to 1987 hit Mr. India and not a remake and added that he would introduce a new villain in the film.

In the original, Amrish Puri played the baddie Mogambo and his performance was one of the high points of the sci-fi comedy.

“Obviously, there won’t be a Mogambo unless we are remaking the same film. As of now, we don’t have plans of remaking the same film. We are working on a sequel. If there is a sequel, Mogambo won’t be there, there would be a new villain,” Kapoor said here on Monday while unveiling the cover of People’s magazine featuring his wife and actress Sridevi.

There were reports that Salman Khan will be roped in to play the villain in the sequel. When asked about the same, Kapoor said, “If I had my way, I would plan every film with Salman Khan. But this is not in my hands, it will be according to the script.”

Sridevi had played lead actor Anil Kapoor’s love interest in “Mr. India” and will star in the sequel as well.

“Well, of course she (Sridevi) will be a part of ‘Mr. India 2′ for sure. We are yet to finalise a script. Along with Anil, she will be a part of it,” Kapoor said.

“My journey with her began with Mr. India, so obviously the journey has to continue and how can it continue without her, especially when it’s ‘Mr. India’?” he added.

However, Kapoor, 57, is currently focusing on No Entry Mein Entry. “But before I get down to ‘Mr. India’, we have just finished the script for No Entry Mein Entry,” he said and added that first it would be No Entry Mein Entry followed by Mr. India.

Children indeed do wonders to our lives. KoiMoi earnestly wishes Children all over the world, a very Happy Children’s Day. Your innocence and sweet love is what remains of the blissful world!

In Bollywood we focus a great deal on adults and their emotional and social issues and hence children centric films have taken a backseat thematically. But to completely deny that Bollywood refuses to acknowledge the younger population of India is tad bit unfair. Yes, they do focus a lot more on the older section, but children have always remained a favorite of all and sundry. On the occasion of Children’s Day, KoiMoi brings to you a list of Bollywood’s most recommended films centered on children.

Safed Haathi (1978)

Safed Haathi Movie Poster

Directed by veteran director Tapan Sinha, this film is one of the first films to emphasize on themes that interest children. Dealing with a beautiful plot, the film traces the innocent friendships of a young boy and a White Elephant named Airawat. The film was artistically a well defined masterpiece. Thematically, it was the first of its kind and was appreciated for taking a strong initiative in emphasizing on the importance of wildlife beauty. The film won a National Award for The Best Children’s Film that year and was appreciated at the Milan Film Festival.

Masoom (1983)

Masoom Movie Poster

The film was the debut vehicle of the directorial genius Shekhar Kapur. Based loosely on Erich Segal’s Man, Woman and Child, the film can truly be termed as an awakening to the Indian independent genre of cinema. Starring Shabana Azmi and Nasserudin Shah in lead roles, the film delves into the life of a young illegitimate child who after the death of his mother is sent to live with his father’s family. The magnanimous weight of adjusting takes a toll on the child as well as on his father’s wife who is shattered to learn of her husband’s betrayal and infidelity. Amongst all the turmoil, the young boy builds a sweet relationship with his step sisters. The film delivers to its audiences, the beauty of childish love which knows no societal norms or rules and all forgiving and loving forever. The child artistes in the film Urmila Matondkar and Jugal Hansraj along with Aradhana play their parts to ultimate perfection. Gulzar’s lyrics and R.D Burman’s music makes the own Indian child song ‘Lakdee Ki Kathi’ one of every child’s favorite in India.

Mr India (1987)

Mr India Movie Poster

Who has forgotten Mogambo? Amrish Puri in his best ever villainous avatar, this film is one of the Top must watch films in Bollywood. Almost acquiring a cult status, Mr. India is a superhero film starring Anil Kapoor in the lead role. He lives with a dozen of orphaned children providing them love and warmth of a home. Unable to bear the expenses of the house and children, he makes Sridevi his co-tenant. He happens to chance upon his father’s invention, a gadget that makes people invisible and launches his war against Mogambo who is fashioned on a Dr No vein. The film is the last venture of the best scriptwriter duo in Bollywood Salim-Javed.

Anjali (1990)

Anjali Movie Poster

An originally a Tamil film, Mani Ratnam later dubbed it in Hindi after the magnanimous success of the film. The film revolves around Anjali who is a mentally disabled child who is on the verge of death and her emotionally distraught parents and siblings who are so attached to her that they are unable to let her go. It is a beautiful story of how society is unable to accept disability and those who are considered unnatural. Anjali despite being a tender, disabled child teaches the lesson of forgiveness, sheer joy and acceptance to find which in the natural, reformed world of today is very rare.

Makdee (2002)

Makdee Movie Poster

The film is directed by the reputed director Vishal Bharadwaj. Starring Shabana Azmi and Shweta Prasad in lead roles, the film is the story of a mansion, two girls (who are twins and has nothing common between them but looks) and an evil witch. The film is an intriguing story and mostly deals with superstitions of rural India and the belief in witchcraft and wizardry. The film was critically acclaimed at the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival winning awards as well. The child actor Shweta does an impeccable job and won the National Award for Best Child Artist that year.

Koi… Mil Gaya (2003)

Koi… Mil Gaya Movie Poster

The film is the Indian version of the 1982 Hollywood hit film E.T. It’s a science fiction film directed by Rakesh Roshan and has Rekha, Hrithik Roshan and Priety Zinta in lead roles. Shot all over Uttarakhand, mainly in Kasauli, where the plot was set, the film is a tale of the unique friendship between Jadoo, an alien and the mentally challenged Hrithik. The film was a blockbuster hit and Jadoo became a craze among kids. The character was an endearing one which swooned all.

The Blue Umbrella (2005)

The Blue Umbrella Movie Poster

Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, the film is based on Ruskin Bond’s novel of the same name. Ruskin Bond who is known to depict child based themes in his novels, was impressed with Vishal’s interest in child centric stories. The film has Pankaj Kapur and Shreya Sharma in lead roles. The film was released at the Pusan International Film Festival was received accolades from critics.

Taare Zameen Par (2007)

Taare Zameen Par Movie Poster

This film was Aamir Khan’s directorial venture and was written by Amol Gupte. The film deals with dyslexia, a childhood disability which Parents and Teachers often ignore as a child’s stubbornness to not study. The film revolves around the young child, Ishaan, who is blessed with imagination and intelligence. The film questions the Educational System which follows a single path to knowledge rather than creating multiple pathways. The story is overwhelming and emotionally engaging one, to say the least. The film was a hit among children and adults appreciated the sensibility of the where the film was coming from. Aamir – The Perfectionist Khan had the most perfect directorial experience in this film, delivering a flawless work!

Bumm Bumm Bole (2010)

Bumm Bumm Bole Movie Poster

The film starred Taare Zameen Par’s wonder boy Darsheel Safary and Ziya Vastani. Directed by Priyadarshan, the film is the Indian version of the 1997 Iranian film Children of Heaven. The simple story of a brother and a sister and a lost pair of shoes, the film’s story is very Gift of the Magi like. The film’s ‘good hearted purity’ was the USP of the film.

Stanley Ka Dabba (2011)

Stanley Ka Dabba Movie Poster

Written and directed by Amole Gupte, the writer of Taare Zameen Par, the film was the launching vehicle of Amole’s son, Partho. The film was intrinsically a heartwarming one abundant in child like sweetness. It transcends one back into the good ol’ childhood days which were so free from worries of adult life, where a dabba meant the world.

Children indeed do wonders to our lives. KoiMoi earnestly wishes Children all over the world, a very Happy Children’s Day. Your innocence and sweet love is what remains of the blissful world!

You heard it abso-flippin’-lutely right! Mr. India is coming back with a bang! The film, way ahead of its times formed the base of technology advancements and techniques in Hindi films then. The Boney Kapoor produced, Shekhar Kaour directed film robbed in a million hearts with its effective screenplay and a beautiful plot. ‘Mogambo khush hua’ became a catch phrase and there was no looking back!

25 years later, the producer-director duo is finally back to make a sequel of the 1987 superhit film, which would again star Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in pivotal roles. For Sridevi, who has sizzled with her comeback performance in the absolutely wonderful English Vinglish, Mr. India 2 would be her next film. Anil Kapoor, India’s international male icon has also been roped in to essay the lead in the sequel.

Shekhar Kapur who was busy with his other commitments could not give much attention to Boney’s idea of the sequel and hence the delay. Shekhar initially only wanted to provide help as a creative consultant but Boney always wanted him to helm the project. And if rumours are to be believed, there would be a special role crafted for Bollywood’s most bankable star Salman Khan who will pack in the surprise punch. He might just be offered the role of the villain in the film.

The film which is set to release in 2014 will hopefully rise up to all the euphoria surrounding it and recreate the same magic it did two and half decades back.

With such technological advancements in the world today where man is making rapid strides to the Moon, it would be interesting to see how Mr. India 2 packs in all its flavor amidst the gizmo freaks today!

There have been many top notch villainous performances, which have created a huge fan following; maybe much bigger than the film itself. Some villainous performances were even better than the corresponding lead actors’, it’s worth compiling a list of top 10 villains from various films.

Classifying Villains has always been difficult. As we get through all these thoughts, here is a look at some of the best Villain Performances on the Bollywood screen ever!

Amjad Khan -Sholay

Character: Gabbar Singh

Amjad Khan In Sholay Movie

We start the list by mentioning arguably the best villainous performance of all time. Amjad Khan had stalwarts like Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar in front of him. If anyone else was in his place, he would have baulked at taking the challenge. But Amjad held his own. He delivered a truly magnificent performance, which is remembered till date and is scripted in the history of Indian Cinema forever. Oh and what makes it more special, is that it was Amjad Khan’s debut performance. Truly epic in every sense of the word.

Mannerism: Amjad Khan’s Gabbar Singh, was a typical Indian dacoit. He has established his hold on the village of Ramgarh. Gabbar Singh is the Sardar of the Toli and is very crude and cruel in his behaviour. There is no such word as forgiveness in his dictionary and his aim is to rule the village by establishing his terror.

Famous Dialogues: “Kitney Aadmi The”, “Jo Darr Gaya Samjho Marr Gaya”, “Yeh Haath Humko Dede Thakur”. I can go on and on, as his dialogue was delivered in an impeccable style!

Ajit – Kalicharan

Character: Din Dayal/LION

Ajit In Kalicharan Movie

Ajit, whose real name was Hamid khan, had previously essayed the central hero character in many of his films. After switching on to the role of a main villain, Ajit found more fame though! After his smash hit villainous performance in Zanjeer, Ajit did Kalicharan. The movie gained iconic status and is still remembered for Ajit’s cold blooded performance.

Mannerism: Ajit was known for his cold blooded style. He would operate as the chief of a gang, who never did the work by himself rather assigning the chores to his henchman and did all the thinking work by himself. Din Dayal is considered as an honest and respected industrialist in the city, but he is indulged in smuggling and won’t hesitate to eliminate anyone who comes in his away. This character portrayal established the stepping stone for a new era in the Hindi Film Industry for Villains.

Famous Dialogue: “Saara Shehar Hume Loin Ke Naam Se Jaanta Hain”,

Danny Denzongpa – Krantiveer

Character: Chatur Singh Chitah

Danny Denzongpa In Krantiveer Movie

Danny essayed the fiery character of Chatur Singh in an excellent manner. If someone has followed Danny’s career, they would know what a versatile actor he is. He could easily essay negative characters in Ghatak, Ghayal and Kohram yet every role was characterized with a distinguished class.

Mannerism: Chatur Singh is a noted criminal who indulges in all kinds of criminal activities. He links up with various businessman and politicians to carry such notorious activities. A powerful crime king who is feared both by politicians as well as businessman and capable of turning the tables on anyone; I couldn’t envisage anyone portraying the character better than Danny.

Famous Dialogue: “Chatur Singh Chita Ke Kaanon Ko Uchi Awaaz Bilkul Pasand Nahi”.

Kajol – Gupt

Character: Esha Diwan

Kajol In Gupt Movie

Kajol had played simple roles till date, but Gupt was going to change her image. The movie truly established her as an established versatile actress. She herself confessed later that it was the toughest challenge of her career to play the character of a psychopath who could cross any limits to get her love.

Mannerism: Esha Diwan, is a silent and normal girl on outer appearance but is capable of damaging and eliminating anyone who she thinks can snatch her love from her. She first eliminates her boyfriend’s father as he doesn’t want to make her his daughter-in-law and then she kills their family doctor as he comes to know about her. She won the Filmfare Award for the Best Villain that year.

Famous Dialogue: There wasn’t any famous or typical dialogue as such for Kajol in this film as it wasn’t a typical negative role.

Amrish Puri – Mr. India

Character: Mogambo

Amrish Puri In Mr. India Movie

Amrish Puri has essayed almost every character in his long spanning career. But one of the most standout roles was that of Mogambo. His role played a key part in establishing the image of Indian Villains on a film and the film fraternity in general. People still refer to his role and dialogues, some 25 years after the film was released.

Mannerism: Mogambo is described an international terrorist who is willing to go to any extent to conquer India. He is a brilliant yet cruel General who is utilising his powers for the wrong cause. From his self conquered Island, Mogambo keeps an eye on the entire activity going on. In a way, the role is similar to Sadashiv Amrapurkar’s in Farishtey and Kulbhushan Kharbanda’s in Shaan. Arguably, Amrish Puri’s portrayal was the best and most remembered.

Famous Dialogue: “Mogambo Khush Hua”.

Anupam Kher – Karma

Character: Dr. Michael Dang

Anupam Kher In Karma Movie

Anupam Kher has played a variety of wicked roles in his long career. Karma is mostly remembered for Dilip Kumar’s brilliant performance but what was equally outstanding was Anupam Kher’s portrayal of Dr.Dang was absolutely brilliant. What was so striking about this villain was that, he was a very well educated man. His main aim is to exploit the use of science to spread terrorism. The cold and calculated manner of his dialogue delivery was just supreme.

Mannerism: Dr.Dang is a criminal who is sophisticated, well educated and extremely smart. He is extremely confident, charming and has good communication skills. When he is brought in to the jail, he confidently quips that he has been in most of the world’s jails but has never been there for more than one week!

Famous Dialogues: “Iss Thappad Ki Goonj Suni Tumne? Ab iss Goonj ki Goonj tumhe Zindagi bhar sunaayi degi”. Dr. Dang replies in response to the slap by the Jailor Dilip Kumar.

John Abraham – Dhoom

Character: Kabir

John Abraham In Dhoom Movie

Perhaps no other Villain has gained as much popularity as John Abraham in recent years. Dhoom was a trendsetter and rather than Abhishek Bachchan who was the leading hero, it was John who stole the limelight! Suave looks, stiff yet convincing dialogue delivery and his easy going persona made this role a huge hit.

Mannerism: Kabir is a normal guy who works in a Pizza shop except when he is off robbing. He is the head of the biker gang which specialises in robbing money. Skilled in engineering and modifying high speed bikes, Kabir uses his intelligence and personality to rob as much money as he can.

Famous Dialogues: John’s every dialogue was spoken with confidence expected from a charismatic and handsome thief. “Tumhare Saamne se Nikal Jaaunga and Aur Tum Pakad Nahi Paaoge” was one such sentence.

Prakash Raj – Singham

Character – Jaikant Shikre

Prakash Raj In Singham Movie

This is undoubtedly one of the best villainous performances of recent times! What really stands out for me is that it’s the same powerful villain of yesteryears but the manneof portraying was so different. Every aspect of acting was commendable in his portrayal of Jaikant Shikre. Perhaps, Prakash Raj is better known as Jaikant Shikre which is a testament of his excellent acting in the movie.

Mannerism: Jaikant Shikre lives in Goa City and considers himself the unprecedented king of the town. He makes money through killings, drug deals, extortions and every other criminal activity you can think of! Do whatever, but don’t hurt Jaikant’s ego is what his message is to people. A slightly witty way of conversation also fits very well in the overall scheme of the character.

Famous Dialogues: “Aata Mhaaji Satakli re”, “Aali re Aali, Ata Tujhi Paali Aali”. These two dialogues are the most famous dialogues arguably these days! Jaikant Shikre’s dialogues created a rage throughout when the movie was released.

Anil Kapoor gets talking about his fame, arrogance and family in this interview.

After more than 30 years in the Indian film industry, both of Anil Kapoor’s daughters have made their entry into Bollywood. His girls, Rhea and Sonam Kapoor, are both in their early 20s and are already prepared for stardom with all the wisdom from their lineage in the film industry.

But Anil has slowly and steadfastly made his mark; be it with the trademark ‘Jhakaas!’ or the arrogance of the game master in Slumdog Millionaire. The original Mr. India traced his four decade long journey with Komal Nahta, “In my first decade I was aggressive, I was arrogant, and I thought I was the best in the world. I thought I could conquer the world. In the second decade, I actually did. When people criticized me, I thought they were jealous of me. The third decade was about doing something, planning and trying to understand criticism. It was about being a good human being, husband and father. In the fourth decade, I’m enjoying the fruits.”

This Kapoor family is fast becoming the next First Family of Bollywood. Anil’s father Surinder Kapoor, brother Boney Kapoor and daughter Rhea Kapoor are all producers. His brother Sanjay, sister-in-law Sridevi and daughter Sonam Kapoor are actors while son Harshvardhan is pursuing a course in filmmaking in the US. But Anil Kapoor hasn’t forced any of his kids to join the bandwagon, “When Sonam was offered a film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, all I asked her was whether she wanted to be an actress or not.”

Pappa is definitely proud of how his kids have turned out. On daughter Rhea, he says, “Rhea is like her mother, she doesn’t like coming in front of the camera. She loves producing. She’ll be the most beautiful producer!” Touché!

Boney Kapoor in a freewheeling chat on ‘Milenge Milenge’, sequels to ‘Wanted’, ‘Mr. India’ and ‘No Entry’, and the hopeful comeback of wife Sreedevi. Must read!

Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor has had his fair share of hits and misses. After Wanted, the producer is hoping for another strike with the Shahid Kapoor – Kareena Kapoor starrer Milenge Milenge. In an interview with Komal Nahta on ETC’s Bollywood Business, here’s what Boney had to say about the delay of the film, the title of ‘Remake King’, sequels and wife Sreedevi’s comeback.

Milenge Milenge’ was on hold for quite some time. Do you think the news of it being stuck will affect the sales of the film?
It isn’t a nuclear bomb formula, it’s not a secret! The film is about fate. Maybe it’s the movie’s fate, or mine, that the film’s release had been delayed for many reasons. Obviously there will be negative talk about the prospect of the film but I believe that once the film starts, the content takes over. I feel it has got enough meat to hold everyone’s attention.

There was news about your rift with Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor for not helping with the promotions of ‘Milenge Milenge’…
I don’t want to talk about it. As I said, maybe it is my destiny… the movie’s destiny that it should be withheld for so long. I don’t hold any grievances against Shahid or Kareena.

Did the title of the film come after the Shahid-Kareena’s breakup or…?
The script came to me with this title (Milenge Milenge). In fact, the first song recorded was the title song! There are 2-3 versions of the title song which have been shot in Delhi, Indore and Bangkok.

Does your wife, Sreedevi, help you take your decisions?
She plays a big part in the decision-making. She’s usually with me when I see these South Indian films. She isn’t just my interpreter; she also gives her inputs and takes. She’s a principal part of the setup and I value her suggestions.

“Sreedevi will be seen on screen very soon.”

The question everyone’s been asking: Is Sreedevi staging a comeback?
Definitely, Sreedevi will be seen on screen very soon. We’re looking at subjects and I’m in serious talks with a director who’s given a recent hit. There is a possibility that it may happen sooner than people think… She was offered Baghban, but she the kids were too young and she wanted to be with them. She even had a television show, but she decided that her kids needed her more than her fans.

Your son Arjun is getting trained to get into films. Will you give him a grand launch?
Surely! I will definitely launch him the way he feels comfortable. He’s been an assistant director to two directors. He’s also very focused and dedicated and has lost 25-30kgs in the past or year or so. I will launch my son Arjun in the best way I can.

You generally remake hit South Indian films, which has earned you the reputation of the ‘Remake King’…
I have done a handful of remakes. My most famous film, Mr. India, wasn’t a remake, neither was Pukar. D Company, which I did with Ramu (Ram Gopal Varma), wasn’t a remake either. They were original films. For ‘No Entry’ we just took the essence of the film. When I have bought the rights of the film, why not take the best parts? I don’t see a problem with that; after all I’ve legitimately brought the rights of the film. Even Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was almost a remake of Woh Saat Din!

“Mr.India, No Entry and Wanted sequels are in the pipeline.”

There has been word of the sequels to ‘Mr. India’, ‘No Entry’ and even a ‘Wanted’ Part 2. Are you turning ‘Sequel King’ from ‘Remake King’?
I don’t know about ‘Remake King’, but when you have properties like these which have got inherent potential for success, you have to cash in on them. We already have a first draft of the No Entry sequel. We have a treatment draft of the sequel to Mr India from 2 different writers. Prabhu Deva has worked on a more elaborate script for the sequel for Wanted, but he’s currently busy doing a Tamil film. There is a strong possibility that they may be lucrative from a business angle. There are all these positive elements which are driving me to make their sequels.

It’s generally considered that you cling to actors and they cling on to their producer, i.e. you. Can we expect another film with Salman Khan then?
With Salman Khan, it’s all about rapport. I had a good rapport with him, so we continued doing films together. I share a good comfort level with him and he’s okay with me as a filmmaker.

You said that you’re inspired by K. Asif and Raj Kapoor, both filmmakers. Have you ever wanted to go behind the camera to give shape to your ideas as a director?
I began my career as an assistant director and it was much later that I went on to become producer. But one thing is for sure; before I call it a day I will definitely direct a film. As of now, there are no such plans.

Unarguably, Amrish Puri was the man of his times. We take you through some of the actor’s most memorable roles on the occasion of his birth anniversary on June 22.

One of the most memorable villains of Bollywood, Amrish Puri made his debut with Prem Pujari in 1970 and went on to act in critically acclaimed films like Ardh Satya, Gandhi and Manthan. Amrish Puri was then re-discovered as the demonic priest in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in 1984. With his baritone voice, bald plate and bulging eyes, Mola Ram was badness personified!

Then came the unforgettable, narcissistic super-villain, Mogambo, who stole the thunder from Anil Kapoor in Shekhar Kapur’s Mr. India. With rumours of Salman Khan playing his role Mr. India 2, we’re wondering what his look will be like…

Amrish Puri (Damini)

In 1993, Amrish Puri played the scheming lawyer Indrajit Chaddha in Damini. His characteristic flick of his hair became as famous as Sunny Deol’s Dhai-Kilo-Ka-Haath and Tareekh-Pe-Tareekh dialogues from the film.

He followed these with memorable roles like the strict patriarch in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995) who eventually lets his daughter choose her own destiny. He played a similar role in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Mohabbatein (2000) as Maj. Gen. Khanna.

Amrish Puri (Mujhse Shaadi Karogi)

Amrish Puri usually played the stereotypical villain, and sometimes the villain with a heart of gold. It’s interesting to note that he acted as Priyanka Chopra’s father in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi in 2004 and her husband in the film Aitraaz in the same year!

Amrish Puri’s 35-year-long career spanned more than 250 films in 7 different languages and with some of the best talents of the film industry. Here’s to the brilliant actor behind Mogamo, Thakur Durjan Singh, Mola Ram… Happy Birthday!
