Predictions came true to the T last weekend, what with neither English Vinglish not Kismet (Kismat) Love Paisa Dilli opening to encouraging collections. These were always meant to be word of mouth films and it was also apparent that former had an edge over the latter. However everything had to eventually boil down to rest of the weekend and this is what happened, what with both films starting rather slow but English Vinglish eventually emerging victorious. Meanwhile there were ample scares from OMG Oh My God! as well which, as predicted again, proved to be a tough competition even in its second weekend.

While first day opening of English Vinglish averaged out to 30%-40% by close of Friday, KLPD couldn’t manage much which means writing was pretty much clear on the wall. The Vivek Oberoi starrer had to settle down around the 6 crore mark which is not quite encouraging. While negative reviews and media backlash didn’t help its cause either, meteoric rise of English Vinglish meant that the writing was clear on the wall.

The Sridevi starrer saw glowing reviews coming from all quarters that only resulted in its deeper penetration at multiplexes. Results were seen on day by day escalation of the film where Saturday scored massively high over Friday while Sunday resulted in a huge peak for the Gauri Shinde directed affair. As a result, the film ended up managing collections of around 13 crores which is stupendous considering its first day of mere 2.5 crores.

These collections are also quite similar to what Vidya Balan’s Kahaani had accumulated in its opening weekend. The Sujoy Ghosh film had sustained exceedingly well to collect around 60 crores in its lifetime run and now all eyes are on how far would English Vinglish go from this point. Though a deserving film, even 50 crores look difficult for now since there are multiple films lined up in weeks to come.

Kismet (Kismat) Love Paisa Dilli (KLPD) made a small 3.10 Crores in its 1st weekend and has thus ended up being one of the biggest flops of the year. This is yet another disappointment for both Vivek Oberoi and Mallika Sherawat as from the looks of it, the movie won’t even recover its making cost and will make a lifetime box office collection of maximum 5 Crores.

Kismet Love Paisa Delhi made an approx 1.75 Crores as per early estimates on its Day 1 at the domestic box office. The movie opened up to a disastrous box office in the morning and could not recover till late evening.

It seems negative reviews have taken its toll on the movie. Vivek Oberoi and Mallika Sherawat‘s comedy KLPD will be a big flop if it doesn’t pick up during the weekend, which we honestly doubt.

The movie has met the same fate that came upon Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal last week. Looking at the numbers, the footfall was more in single screens than that of multiplexes. The same saw some growth by evening shows. However, the growth was nothing considerable and the movie’s collections as of now are way below expectations.

Vivek did a lot of promotion for KLPD and it seems to have been futile. After negative reviews, the movie will also receive negative word of mouth which will further decrease its chances of growing back at the box office.

As expected English Vinglish was better at the multiplexes than that of KLPD and vice versa for single screen theaters. From the looks of it the opening day collections of both these movies are going to be pretty small unless there is a magical surge in the evening.

The new releases, it seems is facing some stiff competition from the well performing Barfi! and OMG Oh My God! Collections of both the releases, however, are sure to witness a growth during the weekend.

There’s not even a pun on the abbreviation of the film’s name – KLPD – that could add any humour to it or salvage it a little bit. It’s just an unending grind thankfully comes to a much need end but only after a painful 150 minutes.

Lokesh (Vivek Oberoi) sets his hunter (“shikari”) eyes on Lovina (Mallika Sherawat) at a party and stalks her to the metro station. Instead of getting his prey, he gets involved in the death of a mysterious, white-sari clad, pretty woman (Neha Dhupia). On the run from the cops, Lokesh bumps into Lovina again.

Then there’s the slap-happy Captain (Ashutosh Rana) and his gang who want to celebrate the former’s birthday with a looting spree in Delhi but end with just about spare change. An innocent delivery-boy-turned-flying-ear-biting-maniac Nunnoo (Anshuman Jha) adds more commotion to the confused story. This isn’t it: there’s also a missing sting tape, another group chasing the duo, a politician’s son who, Nazi-like, yells “Hail Corruption!” at his party, a rape song and some horrendous gags on gay designers.

Watching the rest is an unbearable test of your patience.

Kismet (Kismat) Love Paisa Dilli Review: Script Analysis

Sanjay Khanduri’s story and script is a confusing web which barely makes you laugh. Don’t be surprised if the movie reminds you a lot of Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local. It’s only the Captain and his gang that make you laugh (at least a little bit) even with the rape-song, the rest of them just seem to be trying hard to make you leave the theatre. And what is it with Nunnoo’s character? His hulk-like transformation from a hard-on-luck delivery boy to an insane, ear-chewing creep just defies humour and logic.

Oh, and barely 30-seconds after Lokesh pins Lovina to the ground in a very rape-esque scene, she’s singing and dancing with him at a Punjabi wedding. The dialogues are alright.

There’s not really much acting to talk about. Mallika Sherawat gives her usual expressions. Vivek Oberoi is no Delhi-boy and it clearly shows. At times he tries so hard that you begin to pity him. Ashutosh Rana does well as the Captain but his grey lenses don’t make sense. Anshuman Jha gets on your nerves as Nunnoo. Neha Dhupia is ordinary in her cameo (heck, she shows more scene that Mallika).

Sanjay Khanduri’s direction is alright but he dug the pit for himself with his script. Music directors Amjad Nadeem and Santokh Singh have done a good job, especially with the Happy Birthday and Dhishkyon songs. Savita Singh’s cinematography is banal. Sandeep Francis and Dharmendra Sharma’s editing is alright.

This also translates into the fact that neither English Vinglish nor KLPD can be seen as taking an earth shattering beginning. For both films it would be word of mouth coming into play and that would decide the run they would enjoy at the box office. From the economics perspective, English Vinglish is obviously a costlier film whereas KLPD has been made on a controlled budget. On the other hand while former has been in news for quite some time now due to Sridevi’s comeback, makers of latter have given their all in terms of quantum of publicity.

Though it would be futile to expect houseful boards on the first day for either of the two films, English Vinglish would take a better opening at multiplexes, primarily due to curiosity factor around catching up with Sridevi. On the other hand director Sanjay Khanduri had made a good impression with his first film Ek Chalis Ki Last Local which means he may well have a mass centric single screen friendly entertainer up his sleeves in the form of KLPD.

Meanwhile both films would also have some competition in store from OMG Oh My God! which is fetching sustained audience and very good appreciation for itself till date.

After a huge sabbatical and taking time out to re- build his shattered self confidence, Vivek was back on board with the ambitious Prince that did not weave the magic wand around him. It was Kurbaan that got him huge critical acclaim but post that, Vivek Oberoi was a vanquished hero. The victor was soon turning out to be a ‘bhagora’ until he came back stronger with his latest ‘Kismet Love Paisa Dilli’! Now with a tring of films up in his array, Vivek is mighty pleased with the way his career is shaping up.

On a heavy promotional tour for his comeback of sorts, Vivek spoke to us and gave us a brief insight to what KLPD has in store for us! Excerpts from the laugh-riot entretien!

There have always been a lot of controversies surrounding you and then we suddenly saw you vanishing from the Bollywood arena. When you returned with Prince and Kurbaan and the films did not work, what was going on in your mind?
I always say and I will keep saying that I am a fighter. It is God who writes your destiny and no one else can mar it for you. Yes, Prince did not work but a lot of kind critics like you have praised my work in Kurbaan. And coming to this break, I actually opted for it, not because I wasn’t getting work. You won’t believe that in 12 months, I went for twelve honeymoons with my wife (Laughs). We went to Bali, Monte Carlo, Switzerland, Singapore, Sri Lanka and even the Lakshwadeep for holidays. We were really enjoying ourselves and in the mean while I was also busy reading scripts. I just knew that when I decide to come back, I need to do that with a bang. And look at me now, I have nine films l;ined up one after the other now.

Finally you are coming back and doing a film almost after a span of two years. Are you excited or nervous?
Not at all! I am rather very excited to see how the audience reacts to a film like ‘KLPD’ which is absolutely so refreshing and new. It is not like the typical masala films. And I am very much hopeful that this film will be loved by one and all.

Kismet Love Paisa Dilli is a quirky film, more of a roller coaster joyride where you essay the role of 25 year old Lucky Duggal. Was it challenging to slip into the role of Lucky?
It was extremely challenging because this guy is like a Delhi boy who is very naughty and tries to rip every pretty girl he sees. He has a typical Delhi accent and the Delhi style of talking, moving and using the language of the city. For that, I had to go and hangout with a lot of Delhi University students, hostels, understanding how they refer to women how and what they talk about girls. I had to learn all their words and the way they speak. I didn’t even know what a ‘gajab tota’ meant. I picked all of it up and use that in the film.

The trailer of the film is quite a buzz and then you have the songs like ‘Dhishkyaon’ and ‘Don’t Fuff my Mind’ rocking the charts. How does it make you feel?
Yes, absolutely, I think the songs are really nice and I am very very excited because the songs are by this very talented duo Nadeem-Amjad.  They are two talented guys who approached me sometime back and when I heard their music, I was completely blown off my minds. I really wanted to support their talent and I got them ‘Zila Ghaziabad’ and ‘KLPD’ and they are doing it pretty well. Its for them that the film’s music is doing wonders.

There are a lot of comparisons drawn with ‘Delhi Belly’ and ‘Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local’. Your take on that.
Not really, the films are totally different from each other. ‘Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local’ was based in Bombay and was a serious film. But ‘KLPD’ is based in Delhi and it’s a mad film. With Delhi characters, the film is a total laugh riot. KLPD is a comic thriller, with edge of the seat excitement and has got a lot more colourful characters. Delhi is a lot more colourful with a lot more crazy people in the city.

You have Mallika as your costar for the first time. So how were your off screen relations with her?
She is a really cool chick man! I had a lot of fun working with her. She is completely bindaas, if she clicks with you, then she likes you and if she doesn’t click, then she doesn’t give a damn about you. I had a good time having her as a co-star and we got along really well. Our chemistry is good, both on screen and off it. We a re like a house on fire but she is a major fattu. I keep pulling her legs. She is very darpook and gets very very scared of ghosts and spirits. On 67 nights, we were shooting. So every time I got a break, I used to tell her ghost stories and she would say, ‘Please! Stop it! Main bhaag jaungi, main maar jaungi!’ (Laughs) But she is an icon for sensuality, an icon for desire. To get someone like her to play this girl next door, a Delhi guy’s fantasy turned out tobe lot more fun.

Reports suggest that you are even doing a stripping scene in the film. Is that true?
Ya, unfortunately it is true. (Laughs out loud) I am up for total madness in this movie. But I am doing a full monty because I am not that comfortable with stripping yet, but it is close to a full monty. There is a mad scene where my character almost gets raped!

What according to you then is ‘KLPD’s USP?
Well, it has got everything. It is a mad laugh riot kind of a rom-com and has got the essential elements of a thriller. Within the first ten minutes of the film, it hooks you, grips you and your are gripped to it completely. It is a kind of film that can totally suck you in! It is very today, very bold, it is a film for Youngistaan. It is a film for the badmaash, of the badmaash, by the badmaash and it has a lot of badmaashi in it. That’s the USP!

And after this, you have ‘Krissh 3’ which is hugely anticipated. How excited are you about playing the super villain, a feat that is a first of its kind in Hindi cinema?
I am extremely excited about it because it’s a role of a lifetime. By the way, we know a lot of superheroes, so it is time to see a super villain now!

Post Krissh 3 what is keeping you busy?
I have quite a few films in my kitty now. I have Jayantabhai ki Love Story, Sher, Zila Ghaziabad, Grand Masti and I am signing a whole bunch of films now!

Producer Amit Chandra is undeterred though and says with a smile, “Well, I would be more than happy if these are the kind of comparisons that would be drawn for KLPD. After all, ‘Delhi Belly’ was a fabulous film and it did really well too. From the core setting perspective, we too are in a similar, if not the same zone. Having said that, in our film Vivek (Oberoi), Mallika (Sherawat) or other actors are not swearing. You won’t see or hear any hardcore adult content as such, something which was the USP of Delhi Belly. We have a story of our own and the ride of KLPD is far crazier and funny.”

The film is pretty much being touted as a comeback vehicle of not just Vivek and Mallika but also he as well as director Sanjay Khanduri whose last outing was Karthik Calling Karthik and Ek Chalis Ki Last Local respectively. Doesn’t that make KLPD one film which would be pretty much scrutinised quite closely?

“See, as a producer I come from a slightly different school of thought. Instead of just setting up a project, I want to back my content and director. Vivek and Mallika are in the film because they fit the bill as far as Sanjay’s story is concerned. Also, even in terms of setting the right platform for the film, we haven’t gone ballistic. We are not here to make 70-80-90 crores on the film and hence we have spent well to gain enough”, he reasons.

Sharing examples of some of the mid-budget films that have worked really well with the audience, Amit says, “If you look at so many medium budget films that have done well this year, it has happened because these were good films. Vicky Donor and Kahaani were grabbed by the audience because these were good films and hence did phenomenal business. Ditto for Ishaqzaade. Now with ‘KLPD’ I am positive of the same outcome and even in future I have similar plans of backing content and director more than chasing a superstar. Yes, a superstar does help in getting money on the table but ultimately the content wins.”

The album begins with Dhishkiyaon in the vocals of Sonu Nigam and Ritu Pathak. This is a regular composition with a nice blend of traditional arrangements complemented by modern instruments which makes for an interesting and pleasing outing. Lyrics by Shabbir Ahmed go well with the fun theme of the movie.

Next in the list is a solo track Appy Budday (Videshi) in the vocals of Santokh Singh. This is a cool funky outing which begins with the sound of an electric guitar and blends English lyrics quite well, hence lending some good appeal. ‘Appy Budday (Desi)’ is another edition of the track where Santokh Singh uses entirely different arrangements and also brings in some simple and humorous lyrics. The composer/lyricist/singer adds ‘desi’ Punjabi tadka here which is as cool as the previous version.

Jugaad is a duet track which has a much longer duration and arrives in the vocals of Sukhwinder Singh and Mamta Sharma. Magic of Sukhwinder’s upbeat vocals give this track a true essence of a Punjabi number with catchy ‘dhol’ and whistles that further make it all the more enjoyable. Overall it is a pleasant outing that would certainly do well in weddings and other family celebrations. Lyrics penned by Shabbir Ahmed very well match full-on ‘masti’ and comic theme of the movie. Amjad-Nadeem do quite well with this composition.

The album is carried ahead with Don’t Fuff My Mind in the vocals of Mika Singh and for the first time Vivek Oberoi comes behind the mike too. This one is a situational outing with a satire on Delhi’s life. Amjad-Nadeem’s designing of the song is such that it would be able to attract the masses more. The track has a ‘remix version’ as well which is actually quite similar to the original. On the whole though, Don’t Fuff My Mind just about proves to be average.

When compared to some of the other leading chartbusters that are ruling the heart of the listeners today, the music of KLPD doesn’t bring as much spark. Still, since one didn’t quite lay many expectations with the music of this album, the composers have reasonably well justified the theme of the movie.

One would have expected that being a Punjabi, it would have been a cakewalk for Vivek Oberoi to turn ‘Lucky’ for his upcoming film ‘Kismet Love Paisa Dilli‘. However the actor insists that it was far more difficult the part of a naughty ‘tharki’ when compared to jumping from the buildings (Prince) or enacting some high drama sequences (Rakht Charitra) in this Sanjay Khanduri directed film.

“People tell me that they can see how I have let my hair down like never before in KLPD. Well yes, that’s indeed true, however it wasn’t easy at all”, smiles Vivek who is returning to the big screen two years after the Ram Gopal Varma directed biopic, “To play Lucky was a very difficult experience for me. See, you can ask me to jump from a building or hang from a helicopter; I would be game for that. If you ask me to read a four page long dialogue sheet in one take and I would do that too. However the kind of stuff that I have done in KLPD us unimaginable.”

In this Amit Chandrra production, Vivek plays a Delhi University student and someone who is at least 10 years younger than his real age. For that, he didn’t just have to bring about a change in his body language but also reinvent the whole mannerism as well as vocabulary.

“I had to become ‘Lucky’. Period”, he says, “To get that ‘Dilli-pana’ and ‘Punjabiyat’, I had to keep hearing that language and interact with Punjabis. I had to bring myself into that mode before I could be ready to face the camera.”

However once on sets, he went totally as per the vision shared by Sanjay and even though he has done quite a few films in his decade long career (while the director is just one film old), he was content to follow directions.

“See, I never go to a set and start dictating things. Whether it is his second or 25th film, at the end of the day he is a director and it is his vision. To follow that, I spent a lot of time with Sanjay. In fact I also depended a lot on him for guidance since he knew Lucky and KLPD inside out.”

He was of course available to share his experiences as an actor.

“If there was any issue or problem faced by Sanjay, he was always most welcome to ask me for suggestions. When it came to brainstorming, I was always there. However I was totally committed to the script which was basically Sanjay’s baby. I just followed it to the T.”

“When you have someone as gorgeous as Mallika Sherawat playing a naughty lead in your film, it is imperative that she gets sizzling in a song. With Vivek Oberoi getting it perfectly right as ‘Dilli ka munda‘, the stage was set for us. Of course we didn’t want to go through the usual ‘item number’ route. After all, there have been many in the past and there would be quite a few in future as well”, says Sanjay Khanduri who made his directorial debut with ‘Ek Chalis Ki Last Local‘.

In fact so enthusiastic was Amit Chandra with the final outcome of ‘Dhishkiyaon‘ that he pronto decided to not just use it as a main peg for the music promotion kick-start but also unveiled a poster that details not just the stills from the song but even trivia attached to it.

“I guess this is the first time someone has taken an initiative like this”, says Amit who started his Bollywood foray as a producer with ‘Karthik Calling Karthik‘, “For our film, the idea was to showcase the chemistry of Vivek and Mallika in Delhi milieu and fortunately we have managed to do that with ‘Dhishkiyaon’.”

While the new poster design of KLPD says it all, here is some trivia attached to the film:

- The song which is set in Delhi, was shot on a set in Mumbai where an entire set up of streets was created to look like Delhi, including getting Delhi Autos.

- During the sequence where Mallika and Vivek are leaning out of the auto, the auto drover got so distracted by how gorgeous Mallika was looking that he almost banged the auto into a pole twice. Post many retakes, Mallika decided to speak to him and put him at ease so that the shoot could be taken peacefully.

- Vivek being a true and thorough actor, not only followed all instructions by Brinda Master and rehearsed hard for this song, he also added some quirks of ‘Tharki Lucky‘ to the song to make it more fun, which is seen in the video.

- While shooting the song, it became so popular that assistant directors from all other sets around would come and hang out on the sets of ‘Kismet (Kismat) Love Paisa Dilli‘ just to hear the song.
